Hi! I am a sophomore high school runner. In my freshman year, I ran a 65 second 400, 2:40 800, 5:40 1500.
Note - I dropped from a 6:30 to a 5:40 in between my 8th to 9th grade years, largely due to consistent training (I did extra mileage outside of my school's program.)
Throughout my sophomore year, I was injured: recovering from a broken angle over the summer and a hip issue which prevented me from running. However, I am no longer injured and am eager to get back into training. It was a difficult year because I anticipated consistent training and improvement during my sophomore year but this could not be realized due to my injuries.
I am 5'2, slim, and have muscular legs (I am not super skinny like most girls on my team: I probably look more like a 400/800m runner, but I don't have the fast twitch fibers that one needs for sprinting), and weigh 115 pounds. For these reasons, I see myself as having true competitive potential only in longer distance events. I have good aerobic endurance, being able to run 10 miles at a 8:30-9 pace comfortably. Last July, I did a very challenging, hilly course for a 10k and ran a 8:00 pace.
By the end of my junior year indoor season (March 2020) do you think I could reach a 10:30 in the 3000 and hopefully a 10:20 by the spring (May)? This is assuming that from today, May 27 2018, up to and beyond my junior indoor /outdoor season, run 35-45 miles consistently per week coupled with cross training, general strength and conditioning, and healthy eating. I know that is a lot easier said than done.
A girl in my league got recruited to a top school for a 10:20 3000m. I know this might be training for the "wrong reasons" but I'm a very strong student who LOVES running and exercising -- I actually have experience with anxiety/depression and running has always been a way out of that. I could never stand to be just a student without running - it would feel incomplete. It is my dream to be a college athlete and I think it would not only allow me to have a more secure shot at attending one of these amazing institutions but also enjoy my experience there so much more.
Please let me know what you think about the feasibility of me reaching a 10:20 in the 3000m is by my junior year, or any tips you may have for this process to help me improve to reach as much of my potential as possible.
Thank you guys so much.
