It wasn't a race, but my junior year in high school, during the mile in gym class, under strict instructions from my coach to "take it easy", I had to let a non-track-running football player beat me. He was pretty much going all out, nearly collapsed at the end, and he crowed about beating Crusher in the mile. I was starting to get annoyed, but then he said "I know she let me beat her." At least he admitted it :-)
Usually any man that acknowledges me at the end of of the race has done so in a positive way (a plain old "good run" or "thanks for pulling me to a good finish"). I've never had a bad experience like the one you described but I've also never really had it come down to the wire where I've nipped someone that turned out to be real sensitive about it.
