Our exploration of the ultra world continues.
This week, we ask ourselves, who are the greatest ultramarathoners in history. Share your thoughts and you could win some free Hokas.
Last week, we asked what are the best ultramarathon records and we tell you here:

I would say #1 is Robert Young. Truly a savant of the sport.

Historically the sport has changed.
People used to get rewarded for running really long distances. Yiannis Kouros.
Now the attention is with trail and mountain specialists.
Since it said history and we can't just say "who are the greatest ultramarathoners today" I'm going with Yiannis Kouros.
Otherwise we just fall into the trap of the current runners being seen as the best ever. -

Seconded. -
Three years ago AAlto from Finland ran 3100 miles in 40 days 9 hours on a road loop race in New York, that's 76 miles per day.

Pete Kostelnick ran 3100 miles across the US in 42 days, by himself. Physically, that's gotta be tougher than running the same distance in 40 days on a flat loop. Mentally, they're both insane anyway.
not saying Pete is the GOAT...
but somebody needs to mention Ann Trason, so that's my pick. -

Definitely Al Howie.
Wikipedia included in case you are not familiar with him: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Howie -
Terry Fox is more well known than Al Howie: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Terry_Fox
-
But he is Canadian.
Are we not supposed to find the best US ultrarunner who runs in Hoka's and lives in Flagstaff? -
Give it a few years and Walmsley will be up there.

Kouros smashed his Spartathlon course record easily, and didn't die at the end .. -

ran with max in nz, and so did my dad,
he ran from alaska to halifax if i recall, like 60 miles a day,
plus death valley records both way, in the hottest time.
max is a must study if you are into ultras. -
you gotta check out the chick who beat all the men in a close to 300 mile race in 2 days over tough terrain.

Six weeks ago, Dauwalter, a full-time science teacher, ran 446.67K at Big’s Backyard Ultra before conceding to Johan Steene. Earlier this year she won the Western States Endurance Run, and until this weekend she held the American 24-hour record of 155.39 miles (248.62K), set at the Riverbank One Day Classic in February 2017. (Later last year she outright won the Moab 240 race in 58 hours, 10 hours ahead of the male second-place finisher.) This weekend she may simply have been suffering from too little recovery time.
