Do runners still eat Pasta as their main source of carbs?
What is so good about Pasta vs lets say Brown Rice and Pancakes?

eat them all.
Nix the pasta, forget it. Pasta is crap. Think about it in evolutionary terms. Nobody ate pasta until about 8000 BC with the advent of agriculture. This coincided with a significant decrease in the health, muscularity and stature of humans. For millions of years hominids did just fine without grains. I would be willing to bet the average human hunter gatherer of the Ice Age would beat any of todays top runners if put on a modern training program.
So forget wheat, corn, rice, oats, etc. Stick with high quality meats(free range, no anti-biotics, steroids), fresh vegetables and fruits. You won't believe how fast you recover from day to day once you cut out pasta and the other grains.
Lycurgus,
i do believe you are onto something. The more natural our diets are the better the body will be. Let us not forget that fruits are an excellent source of carbs, so this theory could work. hmmm.
The more natural, the better. This is not new news. Stay with "whole" foods as much as you can. Whole grain breads/pasta are better than white. Fruits, beans, veggies are better yet.

What is a good source of this, Bison?
sounds expensive not to mention hard to get. Also consider that your kids body size will revert back to pre steriodal and growth hormonal beef. See the asians that's normal. Have you ever wondered why asian kid grow up in the states are larger than say their counterparts in phillipines. Ain't good genes, just good ol drugs.
Lycurgus,
There is a guy who completely agrees with you who wrote a diet book called Neander Thin (not sure if that's one word or two).
Anyway, his deal is the same as yours - eat meat and raw fruit and vegetables and there is no way you will be fat, have high blood pressure, diabetes or anything of the sort. You can't even eat dairy according to him - just meat and fruit and vegetables.

Bison may or may not be a good source, depends on how they raise them. I get my meat and poultry from a chain of food stores here in Nor Cal. called Whole Foods. Here is a linkto their meat standards-http://www.wholefoodsmarket.com/products/meat_standards.html
It is however more expensive
They get this beef from a ranch in Oregon, the name escapes me right now. Of course from what i have read it is most likely that pre-agriculture humans ate the organ meats first-liver, heart, brains. Also the bone marrow. And probably much of it raw. I haven't progressed this far yet.
I do recall that on the Lewis and Clark expedition they encountered some semi-starving Native Americans near the end of one winter. Word got out someone had shot a buffalo about two miles away. Lewis wrote that one of the young males proceeded to run full speed to the site wher he cut it open and devoured several pounds raw!
Flagpole-
Yes I've read NeanderThin. good Book. Can't say I follow it exactly because I also eat some yogurt and milk, but not anywhere near the amount I did when I was younger.
It's really tasty!!)
I like a lot Creamy Mushroom pasta with avocado sauce -
