Flanagan’s knees have been bothering her for months and she’s decided that surgery is now the best option to resolve that problem.
Doesn’t guarantee she’ll be returning to competitive running (she’s 37) as she has said this is also about just being able to run without pain —recreationally or otherwise.

The 4% strikes again.

Does anyone need a basis for whatever they post here? That's setting the bar kind of high for almost everyone who posts here. -

Recently got these:

While not exactly the 4%, they have the same carbon spring. Only wore them twice, both times I felt my Achilles and plantar act up more than usual. These carbon sprinted shoes remind me of the ring in the lord of the rings. -

I don't so. Over 20 years of intense training, a lot of wear and tear on the knees, most likely the issue. Could be partially torn meniscus that needs to be cleaned up. -
Sad news . She was a real champion . First Des and now Shalene . 2020 OTs is going to be a changing of the guArd for the US A

Anecdotally, I've been using the VF on training runs. Achilles pain has resulted. I switched to light flats and the pain is gone. feels better too than the bounce of the VF. The issue is the deep sinking of the heel on impact. I think the VF should be used for racing only. Just my experience. Love the VF for marathons but not for anything else anymore. It's not the plate, it's the squishy reboundy foam...

You’re claiming Ritz, Desi, Fauble, Ward, Droddy, Stinson, Biwott, and Huddle will all be injured soon??
-
Do they train in the VF? If one wants to make this dubious argument that the VF caused the knee injury... At least provide that info. Shalane is on record that she used the VF in training. But this means nothing cause and effect of the shoes

Wear the shoes yourself and you'll see what we are talking about. -
Hasn’t she talked about wanting to get pregnant. Now would be a good time
-
Right ... it's the VF and not years of performing at a high level + age taking its toll.
Amazing athlete. I wish her the best no matter what happens from this point on. -
Now that she is coaching and a large portion of the team is hurt, the timing is perfect.
They can all rehab together. -
Another one of jerry's athletes hurt and needing surgery. stay calm tho, this is all normal for professional distance runners.

It's not meniscus, unless she had a problem there on top of the patellar tendons.
In January she posted "I’ve not been able to run the last month due to tears in my patella tendons." The LRC sleuth-doctors at the time were wondering if it had to do with high drop of the 4%s.
The advice I've seen for patellar tendinitis is to try lower drop shoes.
My wild guess is that they had her training a bunch in the 4%s in effort to build efficiency with those shoes, and they overcooked her knees. Maybe just playing a little fast and loose to see if they could eek out another great race or two at the end of her career. -

10 mm drop is not that much, its more like the carbon fibre plate is the problem, maybe both together -

+1
I'm lost here, too, but Shalane and I will always have Boston. Get well soon, sweetie. -
People who have been injury free for years suddenly need surgery after these shoes came out. It's not just a coincidence.
