why false start when you can use the 800 as a slow warm up run for your 3200 m?
Just jog it and wave to the spectators

I was just reading the thread for the comedic value and do not have a dog in the fight. Nevertheless, I was shocked at how many of you suggested doing what this coach character says. I think Dune here is the best advice yet. I especially agree with avoiding the coach. In fact, I'll go further and suggest continuing to avoid the clown the next day at school and thereafter.
It never ceases to amaze me how few of these message board complainers realize you can completely ignore these coach jokers. I was especially good at this at that age. Never met the guy and don't regret that. Showed up for a total of one track practice my whole HS career. This was an accident due to finding them on the track as I went to work out. I knew one of them and joined for a few intervals. Fortunately, the coach never noticed! Any more connection with a HS coach than this is a mistake.

I'm guessing you wouldn't get much sympathy on LetsFootball.com if you posted "my football coach wants me to play offense and defense, but I only want to play offense so I'm considering just not taking the field on defense."
Kids who run track are not stupid idiots, like people who play football.
Do what you want to do, not what the jackass bully of a coach is trying to make you to, just to show off what an a--hole he is.
One thing I can add to this because their seems to be a lot of these threads lately is to check the rules out in your state. Sometimes when you DQ you are out of the entire meet which is more likely to get enforced at a championship meet.
If you race both, you don't have to think about that.
Geez, dude. In my district meet, I anchored the 4X800, ran the open 800m and the open 1600m, and put in a leg on the 4X400. I ran all the same events in the state meet minus the open 800m. I just can't imagine whining about being "forced" to run two events.
If you have a nemesis in the 800, especially one you'd like to take out of the 3200, just run up on his heel on the first turn and then fall on him. Then limp for another 150 meters to show that you really want to finish, before stepping off the track to see the trainer. If everything checks out, you're good to go with fresh legs when the 3200 comes around.

Kids who run track are soft, unlike people who play football.
fixed it.
If you decide to false start the 800, you may want to tell the starter your plan to false start.
Because in an 800, they’ll just put you back in likely.
As far as jogging the 800, you could get DQed from the meet for failing to meet the honest effort rule.
(Makhloufi faced this DQ in 2012 and was reinstated in an appeal)
Of course a intentional DQ doesn’t seem too honest.
Side story:
I had a high school teammate entered in the 3200 and we needed him in the 4x400.
Coach told him to false start. He did but the starter just put him back on the line. He looked at the coach and the coach just shrugged. He ran a nice PR off of the adrenaline of the mishap.
We grabbed a shot putter for the 4x400.

How did your team do in the 4x400? Did you still win?
I false started a 2 mile once just to mind-f@ck my arch rival. The starter gave me a warning (like it was a sprint) and said if I false started again-I was dq. I'm not sure what my 16 year old self was thinking--probably watched too many NFL games where they call a time out to ice a kicker. I did start fairly on the second try, and ended up beating my rival, but losing the race. (Placed third behind two people I'd not taken seriously)

Forget all the histrionics or subterfuge. Just run both races to the best of your ability. You may be surprised at what you can do. Athletics is for recreation and education. You may just learn a valuable lesson.

Give this troll thread another try in a month when high schoolers are actually running championships.

The shot putter ran the third leg in about 70s. Not bad for him.
I anchored and was at least 30m back from the next team. (I think there were only three teams in that heat)
I did catch one guy at the line and split 50 point.
Another twist is the only reason I ran the 4X400 was because I false started in the open 400 on accident.
I did a stand up start and leaned and fell right before the gun. That was the last time I started a 400m without blocks.
anyone who won't run 2 or more races in a meet is soft
Anyone who won't run the 3200 is soft.
So what did you end up doing OP?
I've dealt with stubborn coaches and if he's not listening to you and doing the smart thing then don't even worry about it, if you're not gonna score in the 800 just run an "okay" time by your standards and call it good. Then go out for the 3200 and get those point. All these idiots who are calling you pansies are stupid and likely don't know how running league works. Do your best and score.
Have fun!

Did any of you morans even read the original post? The meet was like two days ago already. I wish the kid would come back and tell us what he ended up doings.
You are right to be frustrated, and as stupid as that coach is for doing that, if I were your coach and you false started the 800 after asking repeatedly not to have to run it, I would not let you run in the 3200.
The coach is the coach, and you are a kid. Being out of high school has privileges, and you are not there yet. Sorry, but you should not do this. When you are on your own, then you can do what you want.
