I genuinely believe we over think this wayyy too much. Every day is going to vary, energy levels, life demands, hydration levels, what you ate the morning of or night before. Maybe marathon pace feels very comfortable, but for whatever reason, you wake up the next morning and you're not feeling as much pop, slow it down, and just get the time in, chalk it up as an easy recovery day. Toss in some strides and maybe a few strength exercises in after the run.
Aerobic development is continually taking place, and it's taken me awhile to learn this. Don't over complicate running. If you're feeling good, let it rip, if you're not, just dial it back and maximize whatever time you have out there.
