Grant MF Fisher splits 3:54.24 and loses!!!

I say great race but it also showed why I hate the DMR. I thought maybe for once I'd see a team win it on the first 3 legs but Iowa State only finished 5th after and they started the final leg 7.21 seconds ahead of Notre Dame and 9.25 seconds ahead of Stanford.

A rare +1 from me for rojo. For all of the "excitement", the DMR is pretty lame.

One other thing about that race that may not ahve been noticed. Wisconsin really blew a big opportunity for points. If they are going to try to win the team title, I"m sorry, they've got to run Hoare on the anchor. INstead he ran leadoff and only handed off in 5th although it was basically a tie for 2-5.

Their anchor got the baton in 2nd and even though he split 3:59, they only ended up 7th.

Can we stop the nonsense about Hoare scoring big in the 3k tomorrow? If he's only handing off in 5th on the DMR, I certainly don't expect him to rock the 3k in his 4th race of the weekend.

Iowa State should’ve had their 1:47 guy lead off 1200, the 2:53 guy run the mile, and the 4:05 guy run the 800.

Is Fisher's 3:54.24 the fastest indoor anchor split ever?

For reference (from Wikipedia):

The United States team of Matthew Centrowitz, Jr. in 2:49.47 (1,200 meters), Mike Berry in 46.40 (400), Erik Sowinski in 1:47.60 (800) and Pat Casey in 3:56.48 (1,600) currently hold the indoor world best in a time of 9:19.93. I think he's suggesting that the first 3 legs don't matter, and that makes the race less interesting. The team with the fastest (or near fastest) miler wins.

Not saying that it's true...or that I agree...

I think Ches split 3:52 a few years ago at this meet.

I believe Edward Cheserek split 3:53.xx to outduel Yorks on the anchor when D1 was last in Birmingham.

Barely remember if internet existed then but in 2002 David kimani split about 352 in the DMR

User “Rare” is correct. 3:52.84 for Ches in 2016

Usually, you say you love competitive races, yet here you say that you hate the DMR because the team with the big lead after three (incredible) legs loses big time and is passed by a bunch of teams. That to me is exactly why it is so exciting.

I wouldn't say he *lost* the race so much as he didn't have enough left in him to win it. He had the fastest mile split by nearly two seconds which in and of itself is just absurd.

It sure hurt Stanford that they had the slowest 800m leg out if the top 8 teams. Not a great 400 leg, either. Solid 1200 and 1600 legs. Since they're the longest, they obviously were hoping that would be enough.

There's a thread right now about how football players can run 46 in a DMR. And that's why he hates it, because the most splits are too slow in the DMR.

Big deal. Any random football team has half a dozen guys who can run that fast.

He didn’t lose, he came back from a significant deficit to almost win and in the process ran a very fast 3:54 split.

What really hurt Stanford was the Oregon runner not getting off the track after his 1200 leg and causing Stanford’s 400 m runner to stumble and almost go down. Then on the 400 m to 800 m hand off the para runner basically stopped in front of Stanford on the hand off causing their 800 m runner to stumble and almost go down. One of those mishaps cost Stanford the title. Both mishaps definitely cost them the title.

I didn’t know para runners were allowed to compete in an indoor relay situation.

Fisher made a big effort to come back from a significant deficit and almost won it.
