Any healthy young male absolutely can not get to a 16:00 5k, I’m under the impression that a lot of you aren’t aware how fast that is just because you run 15:59 and are the slowest guy on your D1 team. The ability to even just COMPETE in college takes above average talent. Anyway, a 16:00 5k equates to a vo2 max in the mid 60s, the average healthyyoung male starts out with a max of around 38-43 and it has been scientifically proven that in the majority of cases this can only be increased by 15-20% with training, some outliers as high as 30% (elites maybe as high as 40-50%) and others as low as 5%. I am sure elites, sub elites and college level runners all started out with an above average max to begin with, and the ones who didn’t have a stand out max untrained definitely had a monster response rate. Seeing as 5k training is probably one of the most efficient forms of vo2 max training there is, this indicates that most men will fall between 50-57 ml/kg FULLY trained, no matter how efficient you are, how much you work on efficiency, biomechanics, form, etc NOBODY with a mid 50 max is getting close to a 16 minute 5k, nobody. If you run that, your muscles have above average talent for consuming as using oxygen efficiently.
The average guy tops out between 17:30 and 20:00 with 5 years of consistant training. The average girl 19:30 and 23:00.
