The team competed as scheduled and no one was injured thankfully.

Serious question, how could they compete . Wouldn't their shoes, shot puts and stuff be burned under the bus as it would be in the luggage compartments?

If you go through those pictures, it looks like the luggage compartment came out of the fire just fine...maybe a little wet. One of the pictures even has the firefighters with the luggage compartments open.
Here is the AP article. Investigators believe the fire may have been sparked by overheated brakes and a blown out rear tire.

That's crazy! Obviously, I am happy that everyone was safe. It sounds like the men's DMR team wasn't too shaken!
I remember something similar happening to the Albion College men's team back in the 1990s. While it's not easy to start a fiberglass pole vault pole burning, they apparently go burn wicked hot and fierce if there's something like a vehicle fuel spill to act as an accelerant.
Question: Why is a team of an athletic department (that has more money than what they know what to do with) traveling 13 hours by bus?
It was bus from airport to their hotel.
Fortunately no one was hurt and Stanford men's DMR did quite well, with Grant Fisher running a 3:56 anchor leg.

Also, Caroline Kurgat of U Alaska-Anchorage ran 15:28 in the 5000, which is a D2 record and top college time this year.
And women's DMR featured OK State, Boise State, BYU and UW down to the finish, all under meet record. Anchors were Sinclaire Johnson, Allie Ostrander, Erica Birk, and Lilli Burdon, respectively.
haha
