I was at the #NBGrandPrix Meet today and was really looking forward to the Men’s Mile. Was it just me, or did Justyn Knight not even look like he belonged in the field? Really hope that he didn’t get a big pro payday from Reebok and ride into the sunset.
Justyn Knight goes home DEVASTATED

4:03 is very bad for him considering he’s a 3:55/3:36 guy. It’s a rust buster but he’s too talented to run that slow. Turning professional is a big adjustment and maybe he hasn’t adjusted yet but he needs to turn it around soon.
RN Flanagan is the top guy in the Reebok distance group. -
Maybe this is just a one off issue, but if it isn’t....I always thought a guy like him would need the social energy and structure of school. Maybe next year he should hop into a grad program a la hehir. Also Charlottesville, and I never really thought it would be his cup of tea. Gotta be depressing just being in one of those anonymous cville apartments w wall to wall carpet. Also cville is kind of red state America/the south in a way Syracuse isn’t, and maybe it doesn’t suit a kid from Toronto. It just kinda has an exploitative vibe you don’t get in the northeast or Canada. I know people love cville, but just my twonie.

We all have bad races. Considering how successful his last two years have been, I doubt Knight suddenly became a mediocre runner over the fall.

Low miles equals slow miles.

It's one race! Justyn may have stepped to the starting line knowing he didn't have a chance at even a sub-4, yet still feeling willing to get race experience. He may have done a hard workout two days earlier, for all anyone knows. Or maybe he's been under the weather or challenged by an injury. Sometimes a runner puts his reputation on the line when he/she races when not nearly in top shape, but doesn't care what LetsRuns finest think, because running a hard (relatively) mile when knowingly sub-par is still experience. That's invaluable training, especially for a young runner.
Decree that Justyn is in deep trouble only if his 2019 goes bust. It hasn't. One race! -

Good! Looks like a tool. Where are the Knight fanboys now? As if we didn't know he's someone that'll have a couple of good races in college than fade into mediocrity in the pro ranks.
Found the guy that got whipped by him in every conference meet! -
It’s January 26th ..just calm yourself down.

I was there too , He looked 6 or 7 pounds heavier than last year , mostly in the butt and hamstrings . After racing 2 years without a break , including the finals of worlds , he probably took an extended break .

Reebok is a great fit. They are irrelevant in the running world as well.

And, Charlottesville is one of the liberal parts of Virginia! Yee haw!
Just a quick drive over to, say, Lynchburg, Virginia & it´s a totally different world! Lynchburg is the home of the Flagger Movement (those who want to keep the Confederate Flag flying). Yikes! Oh, you also have conservative Liberty University there too. (Despite what you might think, Lynchburg´s name has nothing to do with race & lynching though. I looked that up, just to make sure.)
But, I moved to Virginia about 20 years ago & am never surprised at some of the antics of this state. Thank goodness for Northern Virginia (NOVA) for helping modernize Virginia´s thinking...slow progress, but it´s happening. -

Yes- was it in 2012 that M0 Farrah got outkicked by a teenager with one shoe in an indoor race? -

And Kipchoge but Farah was going nearly twice as far at the same speed Knight just went. Farah still ran excellent races. -

I was watching from home and after seeing Knight’s face, this what I thought. He looked out of place and exhausted. He had bags under his eyes and the Reebok muscle tee didn’t compliment his figure too much neither.
In the other hand, it seemed like the hype of the race may have just gotten too his head. A towering Kejelcha standing next to him might have been enough to give him the impression that the race was already won. -
He rust busted a 3:56 last year this same weekend in Boston
As mentioned earlier he probably took an extended break after racing very heavily the past 2 years + sometimes pro runners in their first year come in a little stale after not having a XC season -
One tidbit about Knight. From the best I can tell, he'd never ever run a mile in his life over 4:00.
He ran one in 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 - 3:59.51, 3:56.87, 3:59.85, 3:55.82.
So 4:03 clearly isn't a good result.
One thing that's hard about being a pro, particularly from one from Canada is there is no deadline to force you to get in shape. MY brother used to talk about how in college you had to train as you had to get in shape for conference. As a pro, if you aren't feeling good, you can always just push things back and find another race particularly if nationals aren't that important (which is true for Canadians).
That's why my brother kind of liked marathons. You signed up for one and had to get in shape for it.
But in this case, he actually showed up instead of pushing it back.. SO maybe he thought he was in shape or maybe he was just sick - you know people do occasionally just have bad days - or a coach or agent wanted him to get a wakeup call. -

I have doubts this guy was a teenager when he outkicked Mo Farah.
