I see what you're saying, but the same argument could be made against track, road running and other normie running events. A small percentage of the world's best athletes actually partake in running sports. Culture funnels them into other sports, where they can achieve modest financial success and fame without being anywhere close to being the best. Most aerobically-gifted athletes around the world gravitate towards soccer (lets face it, even in the US) but there is no incentive for most of them to step away. Think of how many Galen Rupp-level talents in the US alone didn't give up soccer for running. Does that make Galen Rupp being the best marathoner in the US any less impressive?
