Hello,
I want to start running at 43 and get to the best mile time by 45. I never trained before. My age 17 and current fitness levels are below.
Age 17 (5"10 - 150lb).
100m-12.0s (no blocks)
800m - 2:12s
3000m - 11:20s
All the above runs were done at school with no training whatsoever, other than 1-2x/week easy recreational soccer. I still remember that it hurt badly for days after each event.
Age 43 (5"11 - 160lb.). No gym or running activity other than occasional walks. I decided to just step on a treadmill and see where my current baseline stands:
5.0 mph walk. Lasted 1.5 hours with no major discomfort. Could do more.
12.5mph run (max at my treadmill). Lasted 1:46. Pushed heart rate to 189. Crazy, but I really wanted to make 2 mins and it felt "alright" until the last 15-20 seconds. Shouldn't have done it in a hindsight.
I have no training experience but I've had no injuries of any kind either. I like fast running and fast walking as long as I can last, but not so much slow monotonous running. Maybe that was the reason I never got into running before.
How should I approach my situation for the max benefits while staying injury-free?
Thank you in advance!
Alex
