If you haven't seen the finish, go back and watch the last mile. To be honest, I turned it on with less than that.
Here's teh finish from Goethels but to me the multiple lead changes is much more dramatic.
Katelyn Kaltenbach coming from behind in the last 300 meters to outkick Marie Lawrence was pretty exciting as well.
I wish I hadn't read who won because even watching it, knowing Sydney won, was so intense... Those lead changes!

Yep. That was one of the best XC races I've ever seen, at any level.
With a first full year of running under her belt next year, this girl's gonna be scary. Maybe she can be the girl who actually pushes KT a little.

It's up there for sure. I'd also nominate the Futsum/Ches matchup in 2011, as they were the clear #1 and #2 in the country and absolutely dusted a very strong field. The last 400 wasn't quite as electric, but they were glued to each other and throwing surges for basically the entire race.
I agree it was a great finish. For a moment I thought Hart was going to hold off the young phenom and effectively take it wire-to-wire, but then Masciarelli had that final burst.
Agreed that it was a great race, but was I the only one who was annoyed that Hart cut the course slightly 4 or 5 times on the curves (and that was only the times on camera)? Hey, it adds up. Not making the case that she should be DQ'ed, but on a perfectly marked course like that, chalked the whole way, there's no excuse. It's pretty weak stuff, bush-league, disrespectful. None of the other girls in the top few, including Masciarelli, cut at all. So I guess I'm more annoyed at Hart's intent, as she clearly was making an effort to cut multiple times. Come on, Hart, you're a champion, a great competitor, a great runner, seem like a good person and all. You don't need do cut the course.

Yep. That was one of the best XC races I've ever seen, at any level.

She didn't start running yesterday. Was middle school state champ in XC, doubled mile/2 mile at NB Nat's in the spring. Very talented, not trying to take anything away, but be realistic.

Yeah I noticed 5hat she kicked up some chalk a few times during the race. She raced the tangents pretty aggressively

I'd put the Hasay-Brasovan (2008?) and Bei-Siraki (2000?) stretch battles up there with today's. I'd have to go back and watch them to try and rank those top 3. Maybe this Goethels one is 4th.
I thought Masciarelli ran smart, and she was especially cagey in not contesting Hart to the top of the final hill, but then immediately starting her kick right at the top. Very well done by both runners! Both beat Lane's times.

Great, great, great race! Sydney is indeed the FL champ this year, and Katelynne might have been if not for pushing the pace the whole way all by herself.
However, I still feel like we don't have a true national champ. Someone needs to convince the top 10 girls from FL and top 10 at NXN to meet somewhere next weekend and have at it! (same for the guys - where the NXN field was much stronger this year).
I know that will not happen... but perhaps we'll see Masciarelli and Tuohy go at it indoors in the 16 or 32 at some invitational. That would be good stuff.

Not likely. Masciarelli will be all about basketball now. Next time we’ll see her race will be outdoor track season.
Someone needs to convince Masciarelli that she has a MUCH better chance of running for a top school like Villanova, than playing basketball for a similar type school, like Villanova. I'm sure Gina would sign her up today, while the coach of Villanova bball might not be so excited.
I don't know if anyone else has emphasized this, but this is the first time, to my knowledge (Verzbicas?) a runner has won a national title IN THEIR FIRST SEASON OF THE SPORT. Just ridiculous talent here. Next year...showdown with Tuohy!
