Just take the distance you are running that day. Say 5 miles, Guesstimate how fast you could race it then slow your pace by 10-30 seconds per mile based on how you feel. If you could race 5 miles in 27:30 you would do the steady state in 28:20-30:00.
If you were going 10. If you felt you could race 10 in 60. You would do the steady state in 61-65. You somewhat want your breathing to be similar to what it is racing but without racing. It should be comfortable but fast. It should be somewhat challenging but not overly difficult. If you feel like you are racing slowdown.
If you are feeling really good heck you may come really close to a PR for that distance, which is fine. You just don't want to feel like you are racing.
