People in the US have no clue how big a responsibility owning a gun is. That is one of the biggest problems with gun ownership. People buy into the myth that they have to have a gun to be safe in their home. But they just go out, buy a gun and think that is all they need. People need training about mental health and firearms. Statistics are clear that anyone who is suicidal will substantially increase their risk of a successful attempt if they have access to a firearm (see below). The other problem is that people have no idea how to handle and store their weapons. The majority of firearms in the hands of criminal were stolen from legal gun owners. My neighbor had his truck broken into when he was at a bar. The crooks took his glock. He left it in the center console because he could not CC at a bar. The idiot had never heard of a gun safe for his truck. And then people think that they can just show up with a firearm whenever they want to be in charge. My neighbor is a police officer. He transferred to doing highway duty from working a beat because he was sick and tired at showing up to domestic incidents and having to collect everyone's guns. He eventually would just pull up to a scene where there was a fight and go on the loudspeaker to ask everyone who had a gun to raise their hand. Otherwise, he would get out of his car and half the people at the scene would start reaching in their waistbands to get their guns out to show that they were CC and legal. The cops would crap themselves as it would look like everyone was going to start shooting at them.
While firearms are used in less than 6 percent of suicide attempts, over half of suicide deaths are with firearms.6
Of the most commonly used methods of self-harm, firearms are by far the most lethal, with a fatality rate of approximately 85 percent.7,8 Conversely, less than 5 percent of people who attempt suicide using other methods will die,9,10 and the vast majority of all those who survive do not go on to die by suicide.11 This suggests that a reduction in suicide attempts by firearm would result in an overall decline in the suicide rate.12,13
While there may be warning signs leading up to suicide attempts, almost half of all survivors report less than 10 minutes of deliberation between the thought of suicide and the actual attempt.14,15 Therefore, the method used in this moment of crisis can mean the difference between life and death, and firearms are an especially lethal means of self-harm.
