I woke up to watch it expecting that Bekele would be able to hang with Cherono but as the pace kept creeping up towards 2:06 pace Cherono made a move to correct things and Bekele just couldn't hang. I said this on Twitter post race but if he finishes he still runs a respectable time... it might be time for him to step away.
Maybe Bekele has an enough of an ego that his place and time would have been an unacceptable humiliation for him. Kind of a "no mas".
I think that was it. When he stopped he didn’t look like he was limping or anything. I don’t think he should retire yet. Go out with a bang. He should run a race he’s proud of and then retire.

No doubt, Bekele has already entered the Hall of Fame.
But his prime is over and he does not get any younger or faster if people continue writing hype novels beginning with "Expect great things" or "He did a 40k tempo at a pace never happened before" or "If only he could train injury free...He would run sub 2 easily".

If this ball bag is not fully prepared and disrespects the distance then he deserves everything he gets. EPO induced scroat, that is the asterisk that will beside his 10k and 5k records.

If that’s true...what does he do with his time? He ran that 10mile race in May..just random runs since then or nothing specific to marathon?
Why are you talking like that. I guess so many people here think it is a joke. They like to laugh at bad things happening to Bekele to make themselves feel better about there former "D1 days"(I'm probably been to nice here).

Thanks for the translation, that article seems to be rather at odds with what the Brojos shared with us though after talking to Hermens ?!

After the race, we spoke with Hermens, who explained that Bekele stepped on a stone in training about three weeks ago. Initially, Bekele didn’t feel anything, but after a couple of days, he developed an injury to his sacrum (which Bekele believed stemmed from stepping on the stone). Ideally, Hermens said, Bekele would have taken two to three weeks off in order to rest up and get healthy, but with the race so close, he could not afford to do that. Instead, he pushed through in training, and the result was that he did not show up to the start line in Amsterdam at 100%.
