A disappointing run for Olympic Triathlete champ Gwen Jorgensen.
Jorgensen went out at basically 18 flat 5k pace which is 2:31:54 pace. I figured she was taking it conservative and would try and negative split it. Instead she hit the wall pretty big. She lost nearly a minute from 30-35k (18:58 for that 5k) and then another minute on top of that from 35-40k (20:01 for that 5k) and then ran 21:06 pace to the finish.
5k 17:59
10k 17:57
15k 17:48
20k 18:06
25k 18:17
30k 18:07
35k 18:58
40k 20:01
40k to finish (21:06 5k pace)
If you were her what would you do now?
The whole year her thinking was "I'm just training for the marathon, none of this stuff matters." But this run would seem to indicate her best distance isn't the marathon at all. Jordan Hasay took to the marathon like a fish to water.
Jorgensen shocked people with her 15:15 for 5k indoors in February but this run today was the complete opposite.

10k in Tokyo is a better idea.

Where does she go from here?
Home!
Delusional talk about being in 2:19 shape, just a total disrespect to the sport. Now, hopefully, people will see what a poser she is.
We don't play that crap in running. .Your running should do the talking and not your mouth!. So far her running is mute. -
I think she should focus on the 10k. She won't win the gold in Tokyo but that's her best shot at making the team. There isn't enough time for to gain the base she needs for the marathon to even make the US team. Damage control at this point if she wants to keep competitively running.. otherwise back to the tri.

She's okay wrote:

Back to the Tri. -

I don't like her, but she should keep trying.
Everyone's first marathon is a crap shoot. And I'm not counting NYC because it is the marathon training that is the crapshoot. Nearly every pro has had a sup-par first performance. She should take away experience from the training, discount the race itself, and move on trying again with small tweaks.
Part of my answer to your question is that she should change coaches. Unless your name is Shalane and you know what you're doing from your own experience, BTC doesn't produce top marathoners. (Men's side is a huge let down especially). -

Yes, at the end of a triathlon. No way she qualifies for the US team at 10,000. -
The longer the distance she has run this year, the worse she has done. The indoor 5k was great, the 10k on the track was solid, the Pittsburgh half marathon showed some cracks, as she was beat by an unsponsored Rochelle Kanuho and could not compete for the win. This marathon effort was not good progress for a 1:11 half runner. No other way to say it. I think it's clear her best running event is at a shorter distance than the marathon.
But for the best chance of actually competing to win a big race, I say go back to the triathlon or do an Ironman. -
Stanleyyyyyyyyy!

...and Cragg, but they're both in the same boat of having enough experience (and doesn't Cragg's husband coach her? I am probably remembering that though)/ -
Raise her mileage and try to run a big PR in a spring marathon
-
I've felt that she was being picked on for a while, but really what she is doing is insulting other runners.
Don't write checks that your ass can't cash... -
Ultras?

Wejo, ignore Sarah Crouch and Katie Matthews, who has a real job. They did great.

I don't know how achievable more mileage is. She really struggled for a while to hit 120 (or was it 100? whatever her mileage goal was). Achilles trouble iirc. -
Reevaluate her goals, focus on making the team, think about the long con, where 2020 will have to be an intermediary step before 2024. Maybe you're right, maybe her best chance to make the team is in the 5k/10k.
For all the hate she gets here, the reality is that I've been following her story more closely than any other female US distance runner in the past decade. I think a lot of other people would say the same. They're just not the most vocal ones on these boards. -

So many folks here are so sensitive and delicate. So salty by someone setting a big goal. Interesting psychology at play here. -
Jorgensen is clearly over training. She's gone from like 40-50 miles per week (granted with a lot of cross training from the Tri) to well over 100 miles per week. Even with the tri training, she's training at a very different level and volume now. I don't think training with BTC is helping as she is likely overextending in every workout. Add that with the crazy mileage and she must be totally fried.

I disagree - actually many of those with great marathon talent did a very good first marathon (e.g. Kipchoge, Rupp, Osako, even Bekele, Hasay etc) And then again it isn't like she just fell a bit short of her goal like maybe Mo Farah who probably was a bit disappointed with his 2:08 debut (without a lot of special training), but she ran a really bad time. I mean, 2:31 is a weaker time than 1:11, but she already bonked running that pace. -

For what country would she be running the 10K? She's not close to the top US women.
