In my home we speak two languages, English and Thai. I'm a native English speaker my wife is a native Thai speaker and we met here in the USA when she was in grad school. Lived in her country for a number of years but moved back to the USA so the kids could go to high school here. Although I'm fluent in Thai, except for reading and writing, and my wife is fluent in English, the kids are fluent in both languages. We all speak both languages at home. We will continue to do so despite what some Right Wing wackos think.

At any point in the history of the USA there was probably 20% who didn't speak English at home. Nothing wrong with speaking whatever you want at home but everyone should be able to speak English.

Naturalised American through marriage from Norway. I was just in Miami today for the first time, and I was astounded.

Not a shock at all if you live in Southern California. Kids speak something like 90 different languages in Los Angeles Unified School District schools.

Also not a shock of you know the simple demographics of the country. Pure white families (white mom and white dad with white kids) are rare to find. Mostly because white women can’t hold their own with foreigners.

What they speak at home is their business and is nothing for you to be upset about. The primary reason for it is because couples are no longer procreating at the replacement rate, so in order to maintain a growing economy, we need legal immigration and migration. It is important for them to learn English, and most immigrants do a very good job of this as they understand it benefits them financially. On the flip side it also benefits you to learn Spanish as well, because being able to communicate effectively with those the comprise one of the larger segments of the labor force can only help you in your career. This battle has been going on since the founding of this country. Ignorant fools complained about it, while entrepreneurs welcomed it and made fortunes off of the less expensive labor (just as they did my Irish ancestors). As far as illegal immigrants are concerned, they are here criminally. They need to be deported and we need to increase the number of legal immigrants. Controlling the flow of immigrants is not something that should be opposed by either party as it creates a level playing field and can allow us to control unemployment rates while maintaining our social programs. The only way this works is by making the penalties on employers of illegals severe enough to pay for the cost of enforcement. When people no longer employ illegals, they will stop trying to come illegally.
