You guys are crazy, 6 gels?
I take 3 with me, and I consume half of one every half hour and mix in as much Gatorade as possible depending on how my stomach is doing and if I'm starting to get an overly sugary taste in my mouth. Otherwise switch to water.
Hit every water stop, take a few sips of the juice and after the 2:15 mark you won't need any gels if you've done a good job up until that point.
This is what I do, and I run just under 3:00
But I to answer the original question, two in my side pocket and one in the hand for the first hour.

Most elite marathoners are taking in that equivalent in terms of carbs within their drinks. I think people scoff at this (as seen throughout this thread) as if it's some hobbyjogger trend to have 6 gels, but why do you think elites are taking in so many carbs? Many of them are not paid to take in whatever they are, so you can't use the "they're paid to do that" excuse.
Realistically should be taking in as much as your stomach can possibly handle. For some people, that may only be 1 or 2 gels. But realistically, taking in 3 gels an hour is in the 75g carb range. So if you run just under 3 hours, I would think 6-8 gels (or equivalent sports drink) is correct.
I bring my own gels for marathons and use a very lightweight belt like this one:

It works pretty well and I don't really notice that it is being worn on a run.
Never said anything that you're referencing, didn't mention the elites, and thought I covered the caloric intake with the gatorade, so not sure who I'm making excuses for or what your driving at with the hobbyjogger comment. Just pointing out carrying that many gels seems nuts, especially when there are usually 2-3 gel stops on the course, and gatorade every mile.
Holding gels in your hands for 3 hours causes extra tension, which consumes energy when every last bit counts. Just looks like you're adding a disadvantage when you have better options.
I stick them up my butt because after I consume them, they are going to be right back there in about 30 minutes.
What about sports beans? Might be easier, for storage if you will.
True. GOAT shorts. Mocked, but worth the price.
