They halted the Pike's Peak Ascent at Barr Camp today. Distance was 7.6 miles rather than 13.32 and elevation was 10,700' rather than 14,050'. Said there was potential for lightning and bad weather at the summit. Turned out to be a great day and the camera views of the summit showed clear skies.
The decision was made before the gun, which I guess is good and bad.
Everyone knew how far they were going and could pace themselves accordingly, especially the people going for the overall win. However, I think even if bad weather came in around noon like they were expecting, at least the first 10 waves or so could have reached the summit and gotten off without incident. If they had to turn back slower runners at Barr Camp then so be it. One problem that arose was there is no means of transportation from Barr Camp except to go back down the trail, so everyone had to either walk or jog back down the trail while other runners were coming up. The trail is narrow in parts and it presented a few problems.
