I'm with you and the contrarians on this thread are being just that: contrarian.
If anyone has the option of having strangers sitting RIGHT NEXT TO THEM or far away in an otherwise empty restaurant they're going to choose far away. End of debate on that one.
People choose to sit right next to others to impose their presence on them. They're usually narcissistic af. Be it the mom with five brats in tow who wants to impose the soundscape of her offspring or the lonely douche who wants to eavesdrop on your convo, it's still about them imposing their presence.
Personally, I get up and move when people do this.
Nonsense. If a solo female, whip out your johnson, sit down next to her and ma5turbate while reading LR on your mobile device.

This happens far too often and needs to be stopped.
If you walk into a restaurant and there are only one or two other diners (singles or couples), do not ever sit at the table next to them, or at a booth which shares a back with them. It's unspeakably rude. If the waitress tries to seat you there, tell her you want another table. If they say "seat yourself", put yourself an equal distance between whoever is in the place. Never, under any circumstances, seat yourself at a table next to, or a booth sharing a back with, another diner -- single or couple.
Thank you.
Why?
Next time I will ask for the table right next to you bro.
