Any reason to not consider splitting up the trials into multiple cities? Sprinters, jumpers, distance, field events, etc. It could be based on weather, or nothing in particular.

It is done already. The 1996 Atlanta Games were in (besides Atlanta):
Athens (soccer)
Savannah (sailing)
Columbus (softball)
North Georgia (whitewater events)
Mountain bike park was just outside of ATL in Conyers I think (or Covington). I never made it out there.
