Complaints over gentrification are simply whining. Full stop.
No one "deserves" to live in a certain area due to intangible factors like "culture" or "soul." How would we possibly determine who possesses these ethereal qualities, anyway?
As a society, we have decided that money is how we solve these questions. It sure isn't fun for folks that don't have money, but it is probably more fair than other solutions, such as physical might makes right (far right), or a totalitarian centrally planned state (far left), both forms of violence in their own way.
I want to live in a beachfront mansion in Malibu, but I can't afford it. However, I do have a lot of soul and culture, so I feel I should therefore be given some subsidy that allows me to live in said mansion at far below market rates. Do you see how absurd this sounds? Who should I displace?
Unless and until we radically change our societal method for determining who gets to live where (lottery? racial quotas? art portfolios???), money is the only answer we've got.
These frictions are only going to get more intense as globalization steamrolls on, with an ever-growing world population vying for a static number of desirable places to live. As the climate changes, the number of desirable places may actually decline. Places that have water and mild temperatures will get increasingly valuable.
As more people realize that the great US suburban build-out was a huge mistake ("the greatest mis-allocation of resources the world has ever seen" according to James Kunstler), they realize there are only 2 places worth living: the city or the country. The suburbs have all the negatives of each (the long drives and lack of culture of the country; the lack of nature of the city), and none of the positives (the walkability and cultural amenities of the city; the beauty and freshness of the country).
So the trend we are already seeing will only intensify: educated, affluent people (mostly whites and asians) are flocking BACK into the cities after the "white flight" of the 1950s and 60s that turned America's cities into ghetto nightmares, and un-educated, poor people (mostly black and browns) are being driven out.
We must also note that historically, this is the natural order of things: the civilized, moneyed class lives in the walled city where commerce and education happens, while the barbarians live in the hinterlands. It is a bizarre twist of history that in the US we did the opposite: gave the cities over to the barbarians and had the elite scatter out the the suburban wasteland. What we are seeing now is actually a correction.
The only people who will complain about urban blight being turned back into productive and attractive urban life will be the people who can't afford to stay, and their allies: that is, POC (people of color) and poor whites, and their allies--affluent people with "white guilt" who will claim they want diversity while studiously avoiding actually living amongst the icky POC.
Here in the CA Bay Area, the drama is unfolding daily. There is no logical reason Oakland should not be extremely desirable and attractive as a place to live. Perfect year round weather. The beauty of the pacific coast. Close access to other beautiful places, from Napa valley to Tahoe, to the greater Bay, etc. It is a wonder it was ever allowed to turn into a "bad place" with a poor national reputation.
Well now Oakland is being gentrified. The poors are being driven out, to places like Antioch, and the affluent are moving in, with their hipster restaurants and bars.
And here you will find a very interesting species: the limousine liberal. I count many of these people as friends. I may even be one myself in some ways (though I am more honest with myself than they). These people will decry the lack of diversity caused by gentrification, but also spend tens of thousands of dollars per year sending their children to private schools to avoid having their kids go to school with the POC. Maybe when enough of them are driven out, they will allow their offspring to attend the local public schools with kids who look more like them!
