Op, correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe what was meant is that Rupp is top 5 in the world currently and thus top 20 in the world all time... Not in the US.

2. Galen Rupp - top 5 today = top 20 all-time
Top 5 today, what other 4 active American marathoner runners are even remotely close to competing with Rupp?

I'd agree with top 5 in the world currently. Top 20 all time though? I don't know, I think we could probably find more than 20 runners throughout history with better careers.
No offense, but having Spence ahead of Rodgers and Salazar is a sorry joke. Maybe a good way to create some heated debate, but a sorry joke nonetheless. Spence was solid but he was champ in a time of horrible drought in American running.
imagine what rupp's resume would look like if he competed virtually his entire career against non-africans.

It would look like this:
2008 Olympics:
10000m: 1st
2009 WCs
10000m: 2nd (behind Ritz)
2011 WCs
10000m: 1st
5000m: 1st
2012 Olympics
10000m: 1st
5000m: 1st
2013 WCs
10000m: 1st
5000m: 1st
2015 WCs
10000m: 1st
5000m: 1st
2016 Olympics
10000m: 1st
Marathon: 1st
2017 WMMs
Boston Marathon: 1st
Chicago Marathon: 1st

Rodgers ahead of Steve Spence for 3rd.
Thrill of my life as a spectator; as a high school senior in '75, my best running pal and I chased the Boston Marathon in my dad's slant-six Valliant. We checked 6 miles at Framingham, then stopped at Wellesley College, and got to the finish with 5 minutes to spare to witness Rodgers 2:09:55. You shoulda heard that home-time roar for Boston Billy. Talk about a Celtic war-cry!
I'm sorry this is off topic- but, do you remember the "check point" records they used to have at Boston?
Not mile points but, I think, the railway stations.
They had "records" for each. I remember Tom Fleming setting some and finishing 2nd.

I would not call it a heated debate at all. This is Spence's marathon career:
Date Place Time Race
18-Jan-87 22 2:18:34 Houston
11-Oct-87 10 2:19:14 Twin Cities
24-Apr-88 9 2:17:49 US Men's Olympic Trials
16-Apr-90 19 2:16:40 Boston
11-Nov-90 1 2:12:17 Columbus
1-Sep-91 3 2:15:36 World Champs/Tokyo
11-Apr-92 1 2:12:43 Olympic Trials/Columbus
9-Aug-92 12 2:15:21 Olympics/Barcelona
19-Apr-93 DNF DNF Boston
13-Nov-94 2 2:18:01 Columbus
24-Sep-95 14 2:16:02 Berlin
17-Feb-96 DNF DNF Olympic Trials /Charlotte
19-Apr-93 DNF DNF Boston
Meb won Boston, NYC, and has 2nd and 4th place finishes in the Olympics. Hall is nowhere close to him in the rankings.

While we're at it, here's Ryan Hall's career without African competition:
2007 London: 1st
2007 Trials: 1st
2008 London: 1st
2008 Olympics: 3rd (behind Viktor Rothlin and Ritz)
2009 Boston: 1st
2009 NYC: 1st
2010 Boston: 1st
2011 Boston: 1st
2011 Chicago: 1st
2012 Trials: 1st
And that is still less than Rodgers 4 NYC wins, 4 Boston wins and one Fukuoka.

That's it, we must ban east Africans from competing like we did with the Russians.
