Look it's not a surprise that phenoms just can't sustain things and it's more mental than physical. You go from racing immature physically inferior talent to a collection of future Olympians from various national programs, in college.
It's well hard for them and maybe they over-train and get fatigued . Pretty soon they start wondering if it's all worth it....
Most of these kids are academic oriented and want a social life as well, so there's that.
Yet boys have the same hurdles and their JR performances are a better (far from perfect but better) predictor of future success. If anything, JR girls tend to be more mature from a mental standpoint.
No it is physical - boys do not change nearly as much in specific ways that can impair running. Your typical female prodigy is a waif with no hips and no body fat - not anything like a typical adult. Your typical boy prodigy tends to look far more mature than his peers and in that way resembles a mature male. One of these two has a much greater chance of changing as they age.
However, what you say is true for both sexes and helps explain why great HS runners of all types sometime do not continue to improve in college but it is not gender biased.
