We've got a recap up of the Adrian Martinez Classic thanks to LRC visitors Jake Hamilton and Zander Kessler (link at bottom) In looking at the photos from Kevin Morris we saw this one:

We tried to figure out which race it was and it was the "B" mile.
When we looked up the results we saw Charlie Marquardt was trying to go sub 4 for the first time. He came up short (4:00.38) but what an effort. He's our new favorite runner at LetsRun.

That Haverford enthusiasm.
That's tough. -
Disappointing. I came in here thinking the runner dove a little short of the line and then had to get up and finish.
-
Charlie's a pretty good example of the cherished Letsrun "blue collar runner," chasing sub 4 post-collegiately.
He ran 4:02 and 3:42.01 while at Haverford, and has run 3:39 and 3:40 in the 1500 the past two seasons while working full time and training by himself.
Somebody find him a lane in a faster mile race! Pity he couldn't get in the fast heat. Not a lot of love out there for the anonymous post-collegiate 4:00 milers, but I'm always inspired to see him keep on grinding. -
diving in lane 2.5 surely didnt help. Why wasnt he in lane 1?

Hope he gets it sometime. A nice story. -
Get this man a sponsor. Dude's an inspirational hard work and steady progress story.
-
Begs the question...would he have gone sub 4 if he had just stayed upright and pushed through the line instead of diving?

Is Lane 2.5 the one that takes you to Hogwarts? -

3:42.01 is equivalent. I suppose it's nice to have that actual sub-4 though. -
I don't fully understand how Marquardt did not make the fast heat. time-wise and performance-wise he has beaten a lot of guys in that first heat.
Any idea if he has any plans to race another mile this season? looks like hoka has a last chance meet before USAs next week in NY. should be a shorter trip for him.
Letsrun should set up a race for him to do it and livecast it. -

No - .39 is 2 or 3 meters so likely it was already missed by the time he started his dive. -
Video of fall.

That looked painful. Dude gave it all.
-
looks like he just dragged his right foot due to fatigue on the last stride...rather than "dove." i've dragged a spike when i was rigging and wound up like that.
but whatever...great effort pal, and keep fighting the good fight! -
A picture is worth a thousand words.
Another view.

Whoa , much respect , those last 30 meters must have felt like 100 to him.
-
Those OG yellow and green Victories. Legendary spike.

That is not "begging the question", but diving makes no sense to me. -
This is just awesome. No medals or big money just a runner going all out to achieve a lifetime goal. Should be shown to every runner.
