I’m late here, but I want to remind everybody still tuning in that Jeff is neither a real runner nor a real running fan. He has huge clown feet (size 14+?) and is both very heavy and very slow, relatively speaking. His advice will not apply to anyone who is not also big, heavy, and slow.
All of this is true (except that I am not a real running fan; not sure what that is about.)
It may also be worth noting that I have improved more since age 30 than anyone in here, I am considerably faster than anyone I have ever met within 20 pounds of me, I have qualified to start in the first wave of every major marathon I have run, despite being 6’4” 210lbs, and I have coached multiple championship teams.
So yes, my shoe needs may be different from someone who weighs 130 (for instance, I really like TPU midsoles, where as many lighter runners don’t get the same benefit or consider them too harsh), but to assume I don’t know what the fvck I am talking about would be a mistake.
