this site if full of haters. they pick n chose some runners as their chosen heros and others they dump on, Rupp is the latter.
Rupp could pull a Lasse Viren and set WR in each event and folks on here would give him s hit.
He's one of the best distance runners the USA has ever produced, racing against deep fields of runners few of the past ever had to deal with.
Give the man props- he's a monster.

I think the hate stems from the fact that he’s so much better than these guys who devote all their free time to the empty pursuit of being a fast hobby jogger.
They have so much of their self esteem tied up in their running that it’s sobering for them to realize they couldn’t beat Rupp even if they got to ride on a motorcycle the first 25.2 miles.
2:06.07 in 2018 is 3:10 behind the WR.
3:10 behind the WR in the early 80s was either 2:11.24 or 2:11.29. I've been harsh on Rupp, but always said he was a baller. And I am impressed, but all he's done now is validate Kellogg.
And see the above that I wrote. His track times indicate a time of AT LEAST that fast. On that course, that's an expected outcome. Settle down.

In the early 80s, marathon records were being set without the best marathoners in the world.
Realistically, all early-day marathon stars should receive the same criticism that Farah gets now. Farah is running in an era of track when a huge amount of track talent from East Africa is flocking to the marathon, and ignoring track entirely. In the early 80s, East Africans had yet to even realize that they could utterly dominate the distance running scene. Once they arrived, drugs or not, it was a one-sided demonstration of how pitiful the rest of the world's marathon talent actually was.

Rupp's 10k is just over 1 second per lap slower than the WR. Just over 4s per mile. His 2:06:07 is just over 7s per mile slower than the WR. The 10k was when Rupp was at his break of running. I don't see him, at his age, getting much closer to the WR. Maybe a 2:05.x, but unlikely to better KK's American Record.

I have no idea how you arrived at Rupp not being able to better 2:05:38 (which is only 29 seconds faster than what he just ran), but I would like to understand better. So you are saying that on a extremely flat Berlin course, with much fewer turns, and much fewer sharp turns, on a day that is 20 degrees colder, that Rupp couldn't run 30 seconds faster?? That's interesting!
If you didn't watch this race, I suggest watching it in length. It should tell you a lot of his potential.
You don't know much about running. Rupp's 10k PR was set on a flat track with a draft-horse to drag him along to victory. If (a very bog if) Rupp ran Berlin it would be a flat course, and assuming he had a personal draft-horse, he would not be able to get closer to the WR than he did for the 10k. Add to that that Rupp is OLDER and past the years of his peak abilities. So, he is UNLIKELY to manage to better KK's AR.
Is there a rule against attaching a helium balloon to yourself while running a road race?
Am I living in the twilight zone? The Boston Marathon weather was terrible!
How rare is it to run a sub 5 minute mile AND bench press 225?
