I’m a Rupp fan. Great interview.
Yeah great interview. Galen is just reserved.
Every Rupp hater who says that Rupp is an antisocial weirdo should watch this. He’s a normal, sincere guy. The fact that he doesn’t write funny tweets or make emotional Facebook posts doesn’t mean he’s evil.
Fantastic interview!
"The buildup, the process, I love that. And racing is the icing on the cake."
2x Olympic Medalist Galen Rupp
Rupp is likable and a nice guy. This board thinks of him as antisocial because he refuses to do interviews with the blojos. I unfortunatley have met rojo several times. I can tell you that if i had multiple olympic medals I would absolutely ignore anyone associated with LR in the “media” zone.
Thanks for sharing. I met Rupp once at a track meet in Houston on his way to Rio. He was very approachable and willing to talk about the 10,000/marathon double among other things. I kept it brief, but he was perfectly normal.

For some reason I laughed at your comment about Rojo.
I thought it was a good interview. It showed some of Rupp's personality which we don't see often because he doesn't do a lot with the US media.
When Rupp talks for a lengthy time here, you see some of his personality which is good. Personally I wish he didn't view the media, or US media as the enemy, but I think to some extent he does. Generally people might think he's antisocial just because he doesn't interact much with the media in general. He has no social media presence. Totally his right to do that, but highly unusual for a star athlete.
My argument would be that it is the US media that asks the questions he's uncomfortable hearing so that's why he doesn't get involved much. And then with LetsRun we might lead that charge and then on top of it he has been vilified on the boards at times. We could have done some things better for sure, but from a media perspective I care about clean sport and are going to ask questions he doesn't like. He if doesn't want to talk to me or LetsRun I've come to accept that. Personally, he and Alberto are the two people I generally try to not interview and have someone else do it as it is awkward. Maybe a more "professional" journalist would relish that but I don't. Alberto way back took me aside at meets and expressed his displeasure w LetsRun, the best/worse may have been the 2012 Olympics when he got upset and called me Rojo, so maybe that's why I chuckled. If there is blanket criticism for some reason Rojo gets it and not me. Plus, Alberto has had his lawyer send letters asking for names of posters. I just felt that's an intimidation tactic so maybe I let him win, but most of the time I don't need to talk to him and can have someone else do it. Wish that's not the way it was, but that's how it is.
The only point I thought in the interview above when it got just the tiny bit awkward was at the 9:35 mark when the guy talked about the "NOP controversies". But Galen handled it fine. Even Brazilian media will ask stuff you don't like, but it's not a big deal, answer and go on. Good find whoever found this on youtube.
9:35 mark:

Do you not read your own boards? Rojo has 150% earned his reputation as the dumb/a-hole brojo. In fact, he relishes this role and even plays it up.
If your boss, mentor, coach, etc. told you that Letsrun was the devil and they were trying to trap you into admitting something damaging, then you wouldn't want to talk to them either.
Think about it, Salazar absolute despises Letsrun. If Galen is friendly to anyone associated with LR, it looks like he's taking sides against Alberto.
He's in a tough spot considering Salazar has been his coach, mentor, boss, friend, etc. for a very long time.
If a Brazilian can't put you at ease, no one can.

To sum it up briefly, Rojo's actual presence mirrors his LR presence, so I guess props to him for being authentic online?? Every year Rojo graces a certain city with his presence during key races and somehow manages to be the number A hole in a city of A holes. He can usually be found at certain hangouts and he is as obnoxious as you can imagine. He's unabashedly in love with himself, his ideas, and doesn't seem very interested anything anyone else has to say. He's a jagoff to the nth degree. There's just zero professionalism about him despite the fact that he's traveling for his profession. I am a meaningless hobby jogger and doubt I would speak to him if for some absurd reason the media required it. No way I would do so if I was Rupp.
Rupp has no social meida presence... good for him. Every day we trash people with social media presences. If he had the presence of Centro we'd call him cocky. If he had the presence of someone of the female runners, no names, we call him attention seeking. It's a lose-lose situation for him. Back in 2005 I was mocking Rupp after visiting the LR boards. A friend of mine said to me, "Why don't you like Rupp?" I had no response other than the people on LR don't like him. Every since I've been a fan. There's a mob mentality to this place that Rojo, and Wejo complicity, fuel. Videos like the one shared by the OP, as edited as they may be, cut to the heart of this. He's a decent guy and a beautiful runner. There should be nothing but love for him on these boards.
Just totally not true. But people can make comments about people on there. So if Rojo can have stuff said about him, Galen will have stuff as well. Not the end of the world that someone calls Rojo an ahole.
Some don't like Galen as a runner because they are not fans of the ways of the NOP. Also they may not like that Galen doesn't make much effort to speak with the press or have social media presence.
Galen dropped out of Boston and avoided the media. Shalane dropped out and gave an interview and people like that. The press likes it as well because they want access.

Understatement of the year right there.

Shalene finished 7th, did she not? She dropped out of contention for the win, but she didn't drop out of the race.

ROFL! +100
Sometimes I think the brojos are a vanishing twin scenario except the second twin dwindles to just an as*hole and then separates and grows into a whole person. That person is rojo.
It was a great interview.
You saw who Rupp really is.
Weldon, now that you are coming around to understanding that you have spent ten years driving this mans reputation into the ground, you are repentant, you are feeling guilty.
I'll be honest;
I find your post thoroughly sickening.
You and your brother and Gault have taken the person who has ;
1. Given his life to this sport like no other,
2. Is the most tested athlete in the world,
3. Has the most documented athletic progression in history,
And made doubting and belittling him your life's work.
He is the greatest American distance runner in history.
Sad, so sad.

Put up the interview of Rupp right after the Boston Marathon I will consider being a fan.
