As mentioned in the LRC recap, virtually unknown Jessica Chichester placed 5th at this month's Boston Marathon after starting in the mass race instead of the Elite women's section. Given the insane conditions and the way the race played out, it seemed like she would be awarded the $15,000 prize despite the rule regarding prize eligibility for only those who start in the Elite section. However, according to the above article, she wasn't given a penny.
Personally, I 100% think she deserves the money. The weather conditions were absurd, and I'm sure even the women in the Elite section she beat (would be curious to hear someone like Shalane chime-in?) would say that she should be awarded the prize money.
However, I think the above article is extremely misleading. It seems pretty clear that the author of the article understands very little about the benefits of having a male pacers (whether Chichester had a designated pacer or not). The article tries to turn this rule into a discussion on gender issues in sport, when in actuality it has nothing to do with that. Chichester and the other referenced women had the benefit of running in larger packs that the Elite women's section did not also have for their benefit.
While I totally understand why the rule is in place, the race conditions were so extreme, I think they should wave that requirement for Chichester and the other women for just this year as it was an anomaly. Each of them ran a hell of a race and deserve every single dollar. I personally had the pleasure of having Chichester blow by me around mile 24, so I hope her hawking my dying @$$ helped in any way carry her home those last few miles :) . Anyway, I just wanted to bring attention to this absurd situation!
