I am interested in getting coached by John Kellogg, but I would like to know a little more about him....Does anyone know anything about him?

bump
You can't; he won't coach anymore than the few he has now. Attention gets "watered down."
That is, of course, unless you've run 14-low and then he might takre you on.
He was born a poor black child.....
John Kellogg is not a bum, he's a jerk. He once had wealth, power, and the love of a beautiful woman. Now he only has two things. His friends and... uh... his thermos. Huh? His story? O.k. It was never for easy for him. He was born a poor black child. I recall the days of JK sitting on the porch with his family singing and dancing, down in Mississippi.
He is made it when he saw his name in the telephone book.
He'll warn you to stay away from the cans.
He will warn you to stay away from gimmicks...like the opti-grap.
Ask "Tinman."

I hope you're kidding.
Tinman believes Kellogg ripped off "his" formulas because he knows 5K is 3.106855961 miles.
Beware this awful plagiarism.
I know he invented cornflakes but can't help past that

Yes, I was kidding.
He is a weak coach that hasn't done anything as far as his athletes are concerned. What has WEJO done lately? Nothing. WEJO had one fluke race that Kellogg didn't even think he could run in 28:04. NIce confidence in an athlete.

I think we should all take several important messages from this post:
1. The writer has ingested a barbituate, a methampetamine, THC, or all of the above.
2. The writer's brain is incapable of processing basic information (i.e., Wejo 30:49 and no better every year in college before Kellogg, Wejo 28:32, 28:27, 28:10, 28:06, twice 4th in 2001 and 2003 at US Champs with Kellogg, Bruce Hyde 4:20 type before Kellogg, 3:42 1500 with Kellogg, Rojo 7 years no running before Kellogg, 2:23 marathon with Kellogg, Paul Stoneham 29+ 10K before Kellogg, 10 years and injuries later, 44-something for 15K, another 29- for 10K with Kellogg, a whole team of Florida high schoolers decent but not great before Kellogg, a slew of 16-something 5K runners with Kellogg, Ryan Deak 9:29-2 miler before Kellogg, 8:58 2 mile and 4:09 mile with Kellogg, entire private school team for 8 years with good results with Kellogg, another 8 years of plummeting after Kellogg).
In short, the writer has added 2 to 2 and came up with 4,367.89.
3. The writer has never run faster than 6:00 in the mile, 20:00 in the 5K, or 5:30 in the marathon, and, likely, all of the above.
4. The writer might be a bitter foreigner ("Americans are wimps").
5. MOST IMPORTANTLY, the writer should be banned from this forum so people do not have to read that horse excrement.
That kellog loves his Dr. Pepper, and takes his prescription with great regularity.
GET READY FOR THE DOMINATION!

It was Frosted Flakes you dumbass.
John's an odd character, without the sort of biography that would produce a novel. He lived in Dallas and graduated from St. Mark's School. His father died when John was pretty young; Junior High, I'm pretty sure. Somewhere in that period of his life he ran a 2:32 marathon, which had to be a national junior mark of some kind. He went to Baylor, where he accomplished times that weren't remarkable on the grand scale, but were unbelievably remarkable considering the genetic goods he had to work with. (This was a guy with perhaps a 57.5 quarter mile best, given luck and the wind behind him, who nevertheless muscled out a 9:09 two miler, yards, indoors. That hardly computes on the classic scales.) In other words, I'm convinced that MANY truly gifted runners, had they trained with the dedication and savvy of a John Kellogg, would be world record holders today. John might have accomplished even more had it not been for a car accident that knocked him out of commission for at least a half a year. A compound fracture of the leg and what I think was a broken neck didn't help matters.(Naturally, he was running when he was hit.) When I met him in 1985 he was still running with high socks, perhaps to hide the scar and slight disfigurement from that accident.
He never let the accident stop hime from training hard and sharing what he knew (and I mean KNEW)about the effects every little habit had on the ultimate goal. He must have been 30ish, or almost, when his mother died. It seemed to me that John had already become such a loner and unique character that his contacts and emotional support systems were only partially essential to him. He had friends in Bill Adams, Kyle Heffner, and was close to the Cooper family when I knew him. Dr. Cooper, whose son ran at St. Mark's and benefitted from John's coaching, allowed the St. Mark's runners to use the facilities at the Cooper aerobic center, especially on snowy days. John and I logged thousands of miles together over the years, and drank many a Negra Modelo in Dallas haunts. Even though I started in under his loose "tutelage" at age 32 without formal training background, I was able to hit 31:38 for 10k on limited ability, and a 1:10:08 1/2M. At 38 I ran 4:06 for the 1500. John thought I perhaps had more natural speed than he -- he was able to look at your legs and tell you what you could do. Jogging around the track with him, you could hear him predict a pace at an odd split -- say, 300 meters, and immediately quote the 10k time a runner racing at that pace would get, even considering the average "die", as he called it. When one high school runner he trained (Gilberto Prado) went through his last workouts before a meet, including a 600 meter "blast," John predicted he would run a 2:01.73 800 in the upcoming meet. The meet came, and Gilberto was timed, ACCUTRACK, at EXACTLY John's predicted time. This was typical of John. I could tell many personal stories about him. But I can only say now that he is EXTEMEMELY difficult to find. I disagree with the implications of one responder's comment that John would only take on fast, talented runners. He takes on runners who are willing to commit to his regimen, and runners whose efforts are sincere enough to allow him accurate training schedules. While the world is full of "personal trainers" who would exploit all or anybody, John is a refreshingly humble and unbelievably HONEST person. He could easily fill up his schedule, charge a lot, and make good money; but I think he doesn't want to water down his efforts. You might find him through Weldon Johnson from Dallas, or by contacting the Coopers. I've practically forgotten those days, and live in Arizona now. But I will say that in my 25 years of running and 13 years of coaching, I've met no one who has matched him in terms of knowledge and precise application of theory.
John Kellog also has ass-loggers disease. Basically, this is an extreme form of obsessive compulsive disorder. His obsession is running. John Kellog does not have a driver's license and does not know how to drive a car. But Kellogg is a genius. He has a masters in both math and earth science. He knows the earth's radius off the top of his head. Yet he can't handle stress. After Weldon lost a major race, John went missing for a few days - they found him 20 miles from home living under a bridge. Furthermore, He has more running physiology knowledge stored in his head than I knew was possible. He is also an honest guy(like the previous said), who legitimately cares about all his athletes no matter how well or poorly they are doing. Finally, somehow he manages to get with the hottest cute little blonde girls. A truely amazing man. The Man. John Kellogg, people.
Jeff Cole that was a great post.
What I said about John was something he said himself; he doesn't take on many athletes because he said himself the attention gets "watered down."
But if you had some guy down and out who had managed 14-low by himself for 5,000m, I bet he'd probably take him on quicker than a 19:00 person.
But he is a great coach for certain, so it was not meant as a swipe at him by any means.
John K coached wejo in high school, correct? and if so, why was wejo so avg. in high school at best, but then going back to work with JK after college, suddenly blossomed into a strong runner with a huge PR in the 10000m. why wouldn’t wejo have blossomed earlier during high school under JK’s tutelage? What was different in working with him post collegiately?
I see the guard dog felt compelled enough to respond. If anyone knows a freak it would be him.
