I agree with you on that, rojo.

As for his big contract, 6 years from now it won't make much of a difference. Sure he makes almost 4 times what I do, but my skills will still be in demand 6 years from now if I perform at my current level... his won't. What am I saying? I'm saying don't think I'm going to worship this kid and not be critical of him just because he has a contract. He has put out some kick ass times and I hope he puts out more, but I don't "owe" him anything because Nike has shelled out some big bucks for him.

Wait a minute. Are you trying to tell me that this Webb guy (who's that?) is going to enter a race and actually try to be the first one to finish? Clearly he is an overcompetitive snob and a genetically gifted freak. He needs to read my columns so he will slow down and eat donuts during the race and finish real slow. After all, all that counts is having the courage to start. Maybe we can teach this Webb character that running is a lot easier if he slows down and takes his sweet time. The fake Jeff Galloway also asked me to tell him to please take more walking breaks.

Considering that he doesn?t have one of the top times going in, it isn?t really going out on a limb to predict that he won?t win.

Pulling away in the final 200m to win by two seconds last week in the 1000 may show that he is starting to get sharp. (or that the competition tied up)

I?ll go out on a limb and predict that he WILL win in a new American Record.

(And when this limb snaps and I fall and break my back please call 911)

Rojo, WOW! You're really going out on a limb, taking the other 11 guys? I agree, Webb won't win, he's hasn't matured enough (mentally) and he doesn't have the confidence, yet. To put Webb's young career in perspective, he's run 3:53 and 3:59 twice (indoors)...those are the only times, ever, he has run under 4:00. I don't think the race will be super fast, but you're going to have to run 3:58-ish (the 1500m equivalent)to win. One last thing, everyone was stoked on Webb's 2:23 1k...that's like 3rd or 4th on the US list. He's not ready.

A lot of good points in your message.

I currently live in Reston, VA (his home town) and have seen him training on occasion (though not lately). I am a big fan, who wouldn't be after that 3:53, and if I were to see him somewhere (other than on the roads - wouldn't want to disturb his training), I would surely ask for his autograph.

As to his recent racing tactics, in hindsight they didn't work out to his advantage. However, these tactics prove he has a lot of fire in his belly.

Best of luck to young Mr. Webb. Hope you win it all someday, more than once.

I agree with you on his lack of tactical experience, I imagine that going from so dominant a high school runner to racing at the open senior level is a difficult transition. That being said, I think he's due for a big win this weekend because tactics or not he is damn fast, proud and wants it really, really bad.

Stember is going all the way. The only way Webb is going to win is on a bike. The race will be won in 3:41.92 with that young has been fading the last 250. I have a vertual girlfriend and a twelve pack of New Castle to your two bucks!

Webb isn't quite in race shape yet?? He will be ready this summer though!

I still believe that he could take top 3. Maybe even win it but that is "really" going out on a limb at this point of his training.

If he wins in 3:52, everyone, including the naysayers, will then say it was a foregone conclusion. Everyone will go on to say that since he was 7 seconds faster indoors than out as a HS senior that this summer he's going to run 3:46 outdoors and break the AR; if he doesn't do this, he'll be re-branded a loser. I imagine all of this is factorred into the $250K he pulls down every year.
