Makes him only the second M70 do go under 3:00. Ed W did it three times. The 200s are impressive.
the 5th one in the photo?

+1
So that would be a single age world record for the marathon. Ed Whitlock ran 2:54:48 at 73 but Gene is 70 and ran a faster marathon than Ed did at that age.

No...I think it's the 6th one or 2nd from the right.

I'm pretty confident he'd handily beat Ed at any distance right now
What's all the excitement? So we have another anti-aging runner with freakish, out of this world genetics...no surprises there. ☝️ How many runners in his age group could come close to his times? Very, very few.
Looks like he's running Boston on Monday, where the course record for M70+ is 3:16, which seems soft in comparison to the times that Gene has run at Boston in the past. I'm guessing Mr. Dykes knocks that one down -- even if its only a week after his first sub-3.
Philly is one of the hottest sports city right now... Philadelphia Eagles win the Super Bowl, then Villanova wins NCAA championship, then Gene Dykes takes down one of the legend's records. Go Philly! Let's keep the trend, Go Sixers!

Ridiculous that so many accolades are given to this anti-aging wonder and out of this world genetic freak. Really people...how many 70 yr olds in the world can run a sub-3 hour marathon? Very, very few. Your average 70 yr old "who can still run" struggles to just a finish a marathon in under 5 hrs - and this 70 yr old rips through a thon in under 3 hrs? Please.
I understand that this is Boston week, but the first American over 70 to run a sub-3:00 and there has been no mention on the front page?
From his athlinks profile it looks like a nearly seven minute PR ... which makes it more incredible. (The late, great Ed Whitlock had been a 2:30ish Marathoner in his 40s.)

It would be great if one of the letsrun guys could catch up with Gene at Boston.

No way that the 2nd from the right is 70. I doubt he is even 60.

He is not in that photo.
Here is an interview with Gene about his Rotterdam race:

Fascinating interview. Incredible that he is racing Boston just eight days after Rotterdam.
Thanks for the link- great interview. Interesting outlook on training and racing, with old school elements (minimal caloric intake during marathons, no stretching) with more modern/innovative (4% believer, 100-milers as part of marathon prep). His coach must be overjoyed.
2017: Myrtle Beach marathon in 3:19, Boston marathon in 3:09, 10 miles in 65:01, San Francisco marathon in 3:33, half-marathon in 1:32, 5 miles in 34:00,
2018: 5M in 32:44, 5M in 30:48, Marathon in 3:25, and then he runs a 7 minute PR at the age of 70 in the marathon with a time of 2:57:43.
His fastest half-marathon time in 2017 is 1:32:48.
Suspicious progression? wrote:

I also noticed that his results were all over the place. He races a LOT, and clearly many of them are "train-throughs". For instance his 3:25 was a day after winning the USATF 8K. It also seems like maybe 3-4 minutes of his PR is from the Nike 4% (?). Hard to judge this all but he seems like a straight-shooting type of guy, just loves to race.
