is it necessary to wear walking boot for heel stress fx? will it speed the recovery?

The primary but important benefit is it keeps you from injuring it again. It won’t heal any faster in the boot but the boot will prevent any movement at all from occurring.
Walking in a normal shoe allows for slight movements of the bone that cause a setback.
Listen to your doctor on the time it will take to heal. Resist the urge to go out and test your foot because that too can cause a setback.
doc says i can do squats, lunges, body weight stuff like yoga, just don't lift weights on legs...
this seems counterproductive...i don't get it.
does this seems reasonable? I am not trying to run nor do i want to right now, but still loading the leg seems not right, or am I over thinking it?
The doctor could be right about being able to do that type of body weight work but I would still try to do these with a boot, if that is at all possible. Squats and side lunges seem safe.
I just know I turned something that should have taken 6-8 weeks to heal into a 12 week process because I resisted wearing the boot.
should you eat little more when healing a fracture?
To heal your heel? Only wear the boot while training your dog to heel.
Ok so I've had multiple stress fx's.
Including a calcaneal (heel).
I never wore a boot.
The key to healing a stress fracture is to avoid the stress that caused it.
Immobilizing it, as long as you haven't pushed it to the point of a true fracture (where it shows up on xray), is overkill.
In other words, don't run. Don't jump. Don't walk more than you have to while you're in the sharp pain phase.
