Should Sifan Hassan be DQd?

    Al Sal got GG DQd. Is it time one of his athletes gets DQd?

    I personally don't think a DQ is the right penalty. I think there should be a penalty where you put Muir 2nd and Hassan 3rd but I'm sorry - you can't do what Hassan just did.

    Yes, and threw up her elbows the last 20 meters or so, too. And while perhaps not garnering a DQ, she definitely cut in on a few runners in the middle of the race. I don't think Houlihan had a medal in her regardless, but Hassan definitely cut her off on the first turn during the second half of the race.

    had this been a bowerman tc athlete doing the cutting off I'm sure they would be celebrated for great tactical racing. the witch hunt really is getting old

    I think Laura Muir should have been 2nd
    I watched it back and if Muir had not been clipped she'd have got silver... but whether the clip was on purpose or not we will never know
    I don't think a DQ is right as well since she would have got a medal either way on her own merit.

    Whuh?

    How on earth would this be a DQ? Hassan was ahead of Muir and was clear to move right in to unoccupied space. Muir could still have passed further to the right if she was actually fast enough. This is all totally normal racing.

    Well, Muir didn't complain about it, and she appeared to be very happy with her performance, as she acclimates to running 5000m.

    It wasn't intentionally dirty, and the two of them are pretty cool with each other. I just think it was a case of instincts, and a natural reaction to wanting to beat her opponent.

    I could live with that as a runner.

    It wasn't anything like what Molly did in the NYC half marathon.

    No, she obviously knew Muir was there so she did it. And that's fine - it's called racing. Have you ever raced? The space was free and she moved in to it. No foul committed. Nowhere does it say she has to run along the rail through the finish.

    I get your point but you can't bend the rules like that when it suits "your/whoever's purpose.

    Either she isn't DQ'd and stays 2nd, or is simply DQ'd. Remember what happened to Chelimo in the last Diamond League race?

    Either the glass is full or empty, there's no middle ground.

    You're wrong. You maintain your line in the last stretch unless you're trying to pass. And in Hassan's case the only way to pass Genzebe was to actually keep her line (and actually running faster than her which wasn't gonna happen).

    I don't know if it's explicitly in the rules like that, but anyone with an IQ of 2 digits would know that.

    You can debate all day whether you want to let them fight it out instead of using the rules, but if you want to follow the rules, it seems an obvious lane impedance, which is specifically covered in the rules as "shall be disqualified"

    Lane Infringement, 4(b)
    An athlete shall not be disqualified if he steps or runs outside his lane in the straight, any part of the diversion from the track for the steeplechase water jump or outside the outer line of his lane on the bend,
    * with no material advantage thereby being gained and no athlete being josteld or obstructed so as to impede his progress. If material advantage is gained, the athelete shall be disqualified.

    If Rowbury wasn't DQd way back in 2014, I don't see why Hassan should be DQd this time.

    If you’ve never seen an athlete drift to the outside to make the one chasing them go wide in the last stretch of a race, you clearly don’t pay much attention to this sport. This happens all the time. Ingebrigsten did that to Mechaal at worlds last summer in the 1500 for bronze (although that was with Mechaal to the inside, not outside) and there was no DQ. But either way regardless of what you think about this, the medal ceremony already happened, Laura Muir is happy, and it’s all over with. But you guys can continue crying if ya want.
