Hello LR,
I propose the following question: If someone has the goal to improve to their highest potential over a 10 year training cycle, what are the optimum lengths of each Periodization cycle? Let's discuss for 5k-10k distance for hypotheticals.
Let's assume there are no indoor/outdoor seasons. Just you and the clock and getting the best time when 10 years is up. e.g. - 4 months base, 2 months of prep, 8 weeks of peak, 5 weeks racing, repeat starting at base (highly doubtful)? 8 months of blended base/prep, 8 weeks prep, race, repeat (highly doubtful)? Not race at all until year 9 (highly doubtful)? Obviously there's no right answer, but I'm just curious if anyone has some solid thoughts on long term improvements with no set racing schedule. Maybe an Olympian training for a race 3 years out, or a teenager starting marathon training to break two hours in decade, or a middle aged weekend warrior just starting their running career. However, let's assume said hypothetical runner is starting out at age 22 and is fit.
