I was slogging along on a particularly ugly training run the other day, and the thought occurred to me that I couldn't think of a single great Jewish distance runner or at least any that I knew were Jewish. Not that it really matters, but where is the Mark Spitz of distance runners? I'm sure I'm missing some great runner or another, but no one came to mind. Can anyone help?

Actually, this topic came up a while ago on another thread. People came up with a number of good, if not great, Jewish runners. Offhand, the only American runner who comes to my mind (other than Deena) is my law school classmate, Dan Schlesinger (third in the 1982 NYC marathon), but there are probably a bunch of others.

If you extend the scope to sprinters and go back a few years you have Harold Abrahams, Marty Glickman and Sam Stoller.
I'm guessing Bikila, Yifter, Geb, Bekele, etc. were/are all members of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. They could be considered jewish.
