Talk about BLOWING your legs up in a marathon.
Talk about BLOWING your legs up in a marathon.
I feel kinda bad for laughing so hard at that video. Shouldn't this be a DQ?
I guess Dallas isn't nit picky about that kind of stuff but yeah, if this was Berlin or chicago and the winner was picked up numerous times, she would of got a big fatty DQ
yes.
And if it was a male runner who embraced her and helped her it would be considered harassment.
The man would thus be condemned as he should be.
Absolutely should be a DQ.
If that had been me, I’d have been waving away the help from the other girl, knowing that such assistance, by rule, results in disqualification.
Plus I’d know that my marathon finish (and victory) wasn’t accomplished solely based on what I could do under my own steam.
I imagine the hobby jogger crowd would tear me a new one over this stance, but as a competitive runner, that’s my opinion.
I heard the first thing she said after crossing was “When are the Vaporfly 4.1% coming out?”
Was an assistance runner running with her? And yes it should be a dq
had to have been somebody running the 1/2 marathon.
Not everyone can run in those NIKE 4%... she's a damn age group athlete that changed her footstrike due to the 4% shoe and the shoes destroyed her.
Still not OT qualifier so guess it doesn't matter
She definitely needs to be disqualified. If you care about the integrity of this sport you will contact the BMW Marathon and request that she be disqualified (@dallasmarathon on twitter).
I just hate this assisting runners across the finish line, especially a runner as accomplished as Chandler. She is more than capable of getting herself across the finish line and doesn't need help. If she just can't cross the finish line, that's how running goes. Chandler knew what she was getting into when she stepped to the starting line. It is not fair to the woman who came in second.
The TV station says this is "heroic". There is nothing heroic about this. It's a race. An example of heroic is people who saved Jews during WWII.
It seems more and more young people are assisting each other to cross the finish line and it is not a good thing. Do you think the assisting runner would have stopped and helped if Chandler started cramping at mile 20? Probably not because no one would have seen it at mile 20. Moral preening is a serious problem in this country and this is another example.
yeah thats an obvious DQ. its not even up for debate.
i hope they did the right thing by the woman who crossed the line second.

How is this "heroic?"
I don't understand why that second girl thought it necessary to come in and assist her. It seems these days many spectators are motivated by similar stories of helping runners and will dash at their opportunity to "help" for their predictable 15 minutes of fame. Sadly, all these stories of "helping" runners usually receive more coverage than fast race times or even athletes struggling heroically to finish off races without assistance.
Don't get me wrong, I know she was in incredible pain and agony at the end of this race, but there's no doubt in my mind she could have crawled/ walked to the finish line without assistance, maybe at most 1-3 minutes slower. The assistance here is completely counterintuitive to the spirit of the difficulty of the marathon.
With this said, I don't blame the marathoner in the slightest. She hardly had any energy left to function, so it would be the last thing on her mind and an added strain to come up with the energy to successfully resist the assistance to keep her result unblemished. Shame on the second girl for coming in to try to "save the day."
I hope in the future races will start to emphasis the importance of not physically assisting runners for the integrity of their times. Unfortunately, all the media attention stories like this get will just keep encouraging this sort of behavior by spectators hoping to be a hero and make the news.
Someone get her a Snickers bar, don't she know your not you when your hungry.
Liberal here, and long time runner- she should be dq’d.
The runner who helped her was part of a relay team.
I completely agree.
There is no way should she be disqualified.
She didn't want assistance and was the victim of unwanted touching.
She is the winner but she got more assistance from wearing the should be illegal Nike Vaporfly 4% shoes and its spring-like plate in the heel of the midsole.
Regrettably a DQ. The twitter mob won't like it, but that's the rules.
The person who was second cares. This is a DQ. Isn't there money at Dallas?
