Where are you at now?
If you want to run a fast 400/800m, work on your top speed at least once a week and hit the gym for heavy weights, low reps once or twice a week. Workout every part of your body, and don't overdo it, know your limits. A month or two out from your 400 or 800 you should be doing reps of 80-150m all out, 4 or so reps every week with 8-10 minutes in between. This will work on speed endurance. Last month should have 2 or 3 really hard workouts at your specific 400 or 800 goal pace and you should be ready. You're better of searching for clyde hart for the 400m training or maybe jack daniels or some other mid distance training book for the 800m though. But don't neglect top speed and speed endurance. Also, if you want to run a sub 2 800m, you will have to have a decent amount of easy mileage and tempos in there for aerobic endurance.
Top speed sessions:
5x50-60m with 5-6 minutes rest in between. Have a running start for each rep and blast it, run as fast as you can but stay relaxed and try to have best possible form.
flying 30's
hill sprints lasting 6-8 seconds, 5-6 reps, build up to 8.
Do one of these once a week and alternate every week.

Don't even pry for more information. If he really cares and wants advice he'll post. Don't force him, it will be like pulling teeth.
Thanks for the reply.
I am a 60 right now. I have not run one in a while though. Would the 800 require high mileage?
