3rd to NAU (with over double their amount of points) and a Portland team they waxed at conference. Does a choke get any worse than this? Sad!

What's sad is you are taking glee in them not running well. They had an amazing season. With the way NAU ran today, they probably weren't going to win no matter what so does it matter all that much that they were 3rd and not 2nd?

It matters, if only because of your commentary on the conference thread.
BYU ran hard today - getting third, while disappointing, means lot of effort. In hindsight, I think this is a course which demands you hit the front early and not be in a position to wind through too many athletes from the back.

Jonathan Gault wrote the article but I also believe what he wrote was correct - it isn't good for the sport for teams to blow off conference meets.
To have one meet that matters isn't good for fans. We never said it wouldn't help them at NCAAs. We just said "What about the sport?"
http://www.letsrun.com/news/2017/10/sport-portland-shouldnt-tanking-conference-meet/yeah that conference thread... lol the portland doubters. Now that portland crushed byu, yeah BYu had a great season blah blah. No they didnt. Everyone was saying there was no way portland could beat byu.
"BYU perfect scores conference meet" is a perfectly interesting headline.
Portland ran great today. That was the priority for the team and individuals racing today. It does not always turn out that way.
Where the article and powers that be are wrong is that they do not get at all what the program is about. Winning regionals mattered, too. Performing well Madison. Training smart and being healthy and fit. Racing smart. Other meets matter, too. RC coaches a large roster, and coaches them equally well. Apparantly the 7 who raced today were ready, smart, tough, and made the most of their opportunity.
Again, very out of the loop, but I know what I know, and I know the difference between that and what others pretend to know.

I think it's awesome that they can "choke so bad" and still come out the 3rd best team in the NCAA. Sure, I'm pretty disapppointed they lost to Portland. But given how quite a few guys underperformed (or "choked" as you say) and they still placed 3rd, it speaks volumes of the strength of the program.
Conference was over 2 weeks ago. If there is a meet to sandbag, it would be regionals.

Tell that to Conner, and see if his grin doesn't get even bigger.
This is what happens when you rest guys at regionals. Bad omen. Now these kids are just special snowflakes. Stop resting them and make them run hard.. gosh darn' it

BYU had an insanely good season dumbasss. You don't have to win literally everything to be considered great.
If you want to talk about choking, what about the other four scorers on Syracuse?

LOL are you sh*tting me rojo? Your bias is insane.
Disagree. The analogy in track is the heats, semis and finals. Many a runner has spent in the heats or semis what they needed for the final. Top runners with goals for the final (Centrowitz, Willis, Portland XC team) slip into the final and save it for the big one. Seems wise to me.
To all the non-believers, to all the non-believers! Especially you, Robert Johnson! Way to have our back, Grote! Anybody can be beat! Feels great, poetic justice.
Yeah, people shouldn't be ridiculing BYU for getting THIRD today. 3rd is pretty freaking special and they should be proud of their truly excellent season.
On the other hand, people should be laying into the those who pretentiously shat all over Portland after conference. UP played their hand masterfully this season and those who got butt hurt and took SEVERE offense about their decision to rest guys at WCCs (when it looked like they were going to finish 2nd no matter what) should be choking down crow now.

It’s a valid point to make about tanking Conference meets. But at the end of the day, these guys train hard and for all we know all of Portland’s runners were a little banged up. From my experience nobody watches conference meets. So I don’t think the sport would be affected if we just stopped having conference championships altogether.
