Another data point:
I was raised in the PNW and attended BYU. Great school, great people, great education. Competitors at other Utah schools were classy. Had a great time running for the team. Wouldn't change it for anything. There was so much to do in Utah outdoors. However, I was excited to leave Utah for grad school in the Midwest. Why? Mostly because as a Mormon not raised in the mountain west, I felt like I didn't in fit into the Utah culture.
There's a difference between Mormons that live in Utah vs those that leave elsewhere. It strikes me very time I go back to visits siblings in the area. It feels a bit like cultural in-breeding; a lack of diversity in culture leaves everybody trying to hard to fit into a certain mold. Or those that can't or don't want to fit the mold go to other extreme, along with all the other "non-conformists". Hence the widespread tattoos and the apparent binary split between Mormon's and non-Mormons.
All this said, there are plenty of moderate folks in Utah too. Just like in politics, the extremes of the spectrum get all of the attention. Keep an open mind, and you'll find that the caricature painted on this message board is not completely accurate.
