I usually buy stability shoes and last April I decided to try out Hoka's new support shoe, the Arahi. I was not only injured once, but twice in both of my hips whilst running in them. Is this common? I thought Hoka's would have had the opposite effect in terms of injury.
Ok here's the deal:
Do you really think shoes that are so beefed up that they allow you to run so poorly will prevent injury?
They key is to run with perfect form. Forefoot strike, slight forward lean, quick cadence, and landing the foot UNDER the knee. Mega-cushioned shoes allow you to get away with anything in terms of comfort, but do nothing to "absorb impact". Actually, they increase impact by luring you to slam your foot into the ground, because of the tall stack height.
It's no wonder your hips are hurting. You are most likely heel striking and overstriding, which send the shock right up the to the knees and hips. The answer is not more cushion. The answer is to learn to run with LESS cushion. As in, barefoot.
