Background: we have a team of about 40 HS guys, VDOT 43 to 65, based on season best 5K. We run three different types of threshold workouts, each several times over the course of the season; sustained runs of 3 to 5 miles, cruise miles or 2000s with 60s rest and 400s with 40s rest. We reset our target paces to new VDOT as it unfolds; progression is by increasing reps and or reducing the rest intervals as we get fitter/stronger. Guys are in training groups based on VDOT, and volume for each is based on age/previous training. We emphasize running by "feel" and in tight packs for each group.
Yesterday's workout was (up to) 22 x 400m on a ~flat grass loop with 40 sec rest between. The weather was cool for this time of year, as it has been almost all season. The target pace for each group was set 1-2s faster than indicated by the tables in Volume 2 (over the years, I've come to believe the Volume 2 Tpace tables are a bit conservative). Even so, most of the groups ran 2-3 seconds faster than target in every rep (slower groups even more), first to last, and felt the workout was easy.
So the question is, are the guys fitter than their recent race times indicate? Should I expect the breakthrough performance these results suggest? Or, did they just manage to "overrun" the workout... I would have thought the 40s rest interval was short enough to ensure they would run the correct (T) pace or fade from the first to the last rep. Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated! Thank you...
