what do you guys think of jack daniels 800m plan?

The 3x600m one is the only one that strikes me as really hard even with a 5 min rest. Yes the other ones are hard but you should expect hard workouts in a training program.

The 4x400 is standard (but hard). What is "FR"? If it is 800 race pace then 3x 600 is ridiculous. 2x600 at goal race pace is almost too much (I never did that but did 600/400 at goal pace with 8 min recovery).

Maybe this is just standard 800m specific training because I am clueless about running training but these seem a bit overly intense in the leaving your race in training way. Are there any of you who don't/didn't do these workouts but approached 800m workouts differently?

My reaction is the same as another comment here. If FR means 800 race pace 3 x 600m it looks too hard with only 1 k jog recovery. And I don`t like those fixed recovery periods by jog. Will the same fixed recovery be good for every runner? Of course not.

I followed the Daniel's 800m plan for two month before having to modify it as to not get completely burned out or hurt. Some of the weeks call for 3 workouts (Q1, Q2, Q3)....like the one you listed, a variant of the one you listed, plus a threshold intervals.

Three things I took away from it.

1. The workouts are so hard that I spent a good 5-10 minutes trying to collect myself after completing them before I start my E Pace cool down jog.

2. I don't think I looked as sickly, emaciated/ripped as I ever have after a month of that brutality. My parents wondered if I was on narcotics.

3. Going into 5K/XC was a breeze after finally racing off that training. I hit 1:53 (yeah...not amazing but I'm not world class) and I ran really well during summer training after doing a few down weeks.

Too hard?

800m is now a 2 lap sprint your training has to be hard.

FR = probably means full rest

these are not overly hard workouts

FR = fast reps (p.148 in the 3rd edition). It's a faster version of rep (R) pace specifically for 800m. It's quite a bit faster too: for a 2:00 runner who's a 400/800 runner as opposed to 800/1500, normal 400 R pace is 68s and fast rep (FR) pace is 60. Interval (I) pace is 78.

I doubt it means full rest. Why then write the recovery jog?

3 x 600m is definitely too hard if it will be run at 800m race pace.

Mike Boit once did 2 x 800m at 1.53 with 4 min rest between and then he ran 1.43 in a race close to that workout.

If we translate that to 3 x 600m at race pace 800m it means about 1.17min x 3 with full rest. Not so easy even if maybe not impossible.

Jokes along these lines are so old, but nevertheless I still enjoy them for some reason.

It's a decent platform to understand his theory, that being said, figure out what works for your level and adjust what doesn't. I never used it and had success so don't think of it as the gospel.

Johnny Walker had more success though.

Dr. Jack Daniels is very respected. A man can't go wrong following his plan verbatim. Professor Jim Beam also has a plan that can yield success.
