The dude came in last in the 10000m race at the world championships in about 29:23. He probably ran faster than that at NCAA XC when he beat Cheserek. What happened? I honestly thought he had a shot at top 10. Was he hiding an injury? But I don't think his coach, Marcus O'Sullivan, would be stupid enough to put him in the race injured. Please let me know if you guys know anything.
What happened to Pat Tiernan

I think he realized after the first 5k that he wasn't going to do as well as he could in the 5000 so he shut it down.

Best NCAA runner = worst elite runner.

Yea he was literally jogging even before they lapped him. He just gave up and wanted to finish -
Not really a world championship strategy.

What? This is the only bad race he's had all season. Where've you been? Pretty sure he kind of blew up and just coasted it in to conserve energy. That's what Mo Ahmed did last year in Rio and then he was 4th in the 5k. -

Seemed to have worked for Mo Ahmed last year in the Olympics.
Last place in 29:32 in the 10,000 and came back to place 4th in the 5,000 in 13:05.
From what I can remember he just got dropped at about 7.5km by the leaders and shut it down once he realized he wouldn't medal. -

Marcus is a smart coach, and there's been no word about any injuries for Pat recently.
After some of the Africans made a strong move, he went off the back of that group and looked like he was hurting. Not sure what happened, hopefully he did just cruise home for the rest of the race. The broadcast came back after another commercial break and he'd gone from being around 100m behind to being lapped.
Pat's been running very well for over a year, going back to last spring/summer to qualify for Rio. This was only his third 10,000 on a track, the last time being at Payton Jordan (?) and previously for the Australian National Championship meet. This track season, he's been on form as well. I'm sure he is ready for some kind of extended break.
Again, I hope he's fine. I really hope that he's in good enough shape to race the 5000 well. -
He was actually hopelessly outclassed. It happens.
-
Worlds is a HUGE stage and Pat is relatively new to the pro world. He was probably really nervous and let that get the best of him. How could you not be nervous when you're on the line with Mo?! 10000 is a long race if it's not your day so props to him for finishing.

Your point was mentioned already...please read next time to avoid being redundant. -
He's been away from Marcus and training with MTC over in Spain leading up to this meet. Probably went away from what's been working and went in a little overdone
-
No props for that crap. He was lapped twice by the top guys and lapped once by everyone else. That was a pathetic effort. His time is slower than the top women can run. That's got to be a record. The only man to run slower than the women at the World Championships.

My vote is jetlag.

I was in the stadium last night on the Track and Field News tour.
What I saw was Zane and Tiernan towards the back early on but looking OK. Then they were in the rear pack for awhile with Mead in no-man's land between the lead pack and rear pack. Then, Zane and Tiernan caught up to Mead and one or both briefly passed Mead. All of a sudden, Tiernan looked like crap and let Zane go.
I don't know what Tiernan's jogging form looks like but his "looking like crap" form was odd. Reminded me of the carnage in the 1996 Olympic trials distance races when it was hotter than hell in Atlanta and people started running with weird form because they were burning up.
I've never been to a Super Bowl but it was LOUD last night during the last few laps! -
Disgraced his nation and himself with that pi$$ weak effort. It's not just about you Pat!

pretty poor effort the way he just jogged it in like that..i wouldn't be surprised id spending an extended period of time with Bideau & MTC has hurt him
