I hope not, but attendance at the old Home Depot meet sucked. Attendance in Sacramento sucked. Attendance at the adidas meet at Randall Stadium sucked. Attendance almost everywhere outside of Eugene sucks. I don't think it's safe to assume that the Olympic trials are such a huge draw that you don't have to be creative and make a major promotional effort to get locals out to the meet.
Let's get some facts out there. Sacramento had at the time record breaking attendance although it dropped off 15,000 between 2000 and 2004.
The Trials are probably going to get good attendance the first time in most major metro areas.
2000 Sacramento, CA 187,104
2016 Eugene, OR 176,972
2012 Eugene, OR 173,153
2004 Sacramento, CA 172,230
2008 Hayward Field-Eugene, OR 167,123
1996 Atlanta, GA 151,522
1984 Los Angeles, CA 143,826
1992 New Orleans, LA 137,262
As for traffic I can' t imagine what it's like in LA. Right now it's saying 30 minutes from Mt. Sac to Downtown LA. But I'm putting in going at 5:30 tongiht and it's saying 50 minutes to 1:50.
So I see how a local in LA may not make the trek. But what's the population of the areas within 10 sq miles of Mt. Sac. Is that bigger than Eugene?
