BroJos: you've advocated that T&F championships should be hosted by cities other than Eugene. And I would love to see others achieve what Eugene has in terms of executing well-attended, compelling track & field championships (a la the 4x4 finish for Women's NCAA Champs in 2017). So, please provide front page coverage in terms of how Sacramento did in terms of promoting the event, sustaining the interest of existing fans and growing the fan base for T&C.
First off, please address attendance numbers. A google search yielded absolutely no information on 2017 US Track and Field Championships attendance numbers. Wonder why? From the little shots provided by tv coverage (the obvious reason?), there appeared to be virtually no one on the backstretch and not too many more on the homestretch for all days.
Next, what about local press coverage. Have seen limited coverage on SacBee - in fact, just went to sacbee.com and had to nearly scroll to the bottom of the homepage to find anything on the championships. Going to the Sports section didn't get much better.
Finally, what about the conditions for athletes? Nearly 120 degrees on the track, Trey Hardee speaking of shoes melting... In spite of that the athletes achieved some good marks, but why should they have to do so in a a desert? Running the 10,000m at 10:09 pm (1:09 Eastern) isn't exactly conducive for great performances
I certainly wish there were other venues besides Eugene that could deliver compelling competition and strong attendance/promotion. But I haven't seen much of it, outside of Eugene lately.
