Donvan Brazier ran a very respectable 1:46.08 for 3rd today in Rome in his Diamond League debut. Last week he ran 1:46.01 for 3rd in Boston so this was a better run but two decent performances vs good fields.
https://twitter.com/letsrundotcom/status/872892903072317440
He ran much faster 1:44.63 way back in April. Last year Brazier ran 1:45.9 in January, then never beat it until NCAAs where he dropped his 1:43.55.
Of course he then signed his pro contract and didn't make it out of the first round of the Trials.
What do you think happens this year? I think he is a step ahead of everyone else in the US except for Clayton Murphy who is couple steps ahead of Brazier.
Brazier and Murphy make the team as far as I can tell. No one else who is a proven 1:44 runner is healthy right now in the US. Berian hasn't race all year. Guys like Harris or Windle could take a step up but as for now I think Brazier has some room for error. Be interesting to see how he handles pressure of USAs this year.

Donavan Brazier 3rd in his Diamond League debut, what does this mean for the rest of his season?

it sounds like brazier is having a good season. didn't really hear much from him the last 5 months of last year. he has a shot at making the team, which is great considering most runners that go pro early don't do very well. also, nick symmonds is healthy and will be racing his last season starting with an opener this saturday. probably won't run faster than 1:46 all season though.
-
I think it puts him in a good position right now. He has a couple of high quality meets under his belt heading into Nats later this month. Who is coaching him?
-
I think he's got gonna make the team for sure. This shows that he's good in a tactical race, especially against a field of this caliber. In fact, this is probably the best and deepest field he's ever raced against and a 3rd place finish is great evidence that he'll be making the team. i think Murphy will win USAs, but Brazier is gonna be hard to beat into 3rd after such a competitive run. Hopefully Berian is healthy, but he's running out of time to open his season.

Poles are fast in 800m. That should be the news. Not some USA guy.
-
He's done obviously we knew that last week

Comparing one 800 race to another is apples to oranges. Opening lap pace, positioning and the timing of the closing kick are always very different from race to race. You can run 1:44 for the win and then lose to someone who closes better in a 1:46 race. Brazier was right in it at this race and looks pretty solid. Kszczot always seems to be able to kick just that much more in races that are 1:45+, but is not as good when the pace is under 1:45.
Brazier flamed out last year after putting it all out there at NCAAs. Brazier went under 1:45 in April and should be in sub 1:44 shape by Nationals. Count him in for Worlds. -
I think it's a great sign. As I said in another thread, there are only about 11-12 Americans that can run 146 flat at all. The fact that he can negative split that with a last 200 close to 25 flat is a great sign.
If you asked me before today, I would have been fearful as to what happens if he gets to USAs and it's very slow. Now I'm not so worried. -
agreed Wejo. Nice summary
He was really close to first place and the guys he were racing are studs. no one ran "fast" in the race. if he ran 1:46.08 and got third but first place was 1:43.x or 1:44.low, then more concerned, but he was up there fighting with fast dudes
NIjel Amos......what's his deal?!

But in another thread you said he's a lock to make the team, which is obviously asinine considering he didn't make it out of the rounds last year. He's obviously supremely talented and equally capable. That said, he's been pretty up and down in his short career with a couple of epic meltdowns (DNF at ncaa, DNQ at Olympic trials and didn't he get DQ'd at us juniors?).
Most of us believe he will and all of us believe he should but he is far from a lock to make the team. There is only one of those, and that's Murphy. -
Splits and race breakdown? Hopefully Brazier will work on some tactics in these races.
-Stay close and kick last 100
-Lead from gun
-Run being boxed in
-go out slow
-go out fast -
Losing to a euro in a slowish race is a bad sign.

Amos got tripped, fell and got back up to finish. -
NIjel Amos fell at 400m - did a great job to be back within reach in the last 100m.
1:48 point after falling isn't too bad really. Prob went 55/53 -
Doesn't sound to me like many here actually watched the race.
It went out very slow despite the pacer going off like a bullet. He ran his first 200m in 23/24 pulling a big lead on the field who weren't interested.
The pack was tight and ran huge negative splits with incredible last 200s and last 100m from Kszczot especially.
Brazier tried to keep close order but the fast finishing Pole had the speed to take the win today. He actually did very well negotiating an experienced and closely packed field. He stayed out of trouble and managed to come through for a podium finish.
Kszczot is not slow as someone else posted, he has a faster PB than Brazier and consistently has run well in big races beating 1:42 guys all day long. He is experienced and it showed today. Great run.
Amos fell over when the pack was so congested so that's what happened to him.
The guy in last was the pacemaker who refused to drop out and ran 49.2 then 60.5. -

Who isn't average if they're average? Cause basically all of them beat Rudisha in Shanghai. Murphy is clearly really good right now. More like average times with incredibly impressive and not average splits over the last 200. -
