You are better off coming in under as there is a cutoff time below the qualifying time, usually 2:00-3:00 faster than the qualifying time. So if your qualifying time is 3:40 (4:10 for women), running a 3:39:55 probably won't get you in. You will likely need to run at least 3:38 (probably faster), maybe as fast as 3:36, to actually get in.
After that, the only advantage to running faster is getting better coral placement.
ACHIEVING ONE'S QUALIFYING STANDARD DOES NOT GUARANTEE ENTRY, BUT SIMPLY THE OPPORTUNITY TO SUBMIT FOR REGISTRATION.
If total amount of submissions surpass the allotted field size for qualified athletes, then those who are the fastest among the pool of applicants in their age and gender group will be accepted.
For the 2018 Boston Marathon, qualifying times must be run on or after Saturday, September 17, 2016.
The acceptance of official race entrants will be based on qualifying time, with the fastest qualifiers (in relation to their age and gender) being accepted first until the race is full.
The qualifying window will remain open until the conclusion of registration for the 2018 Boston Marathon (once the maximum field size has been reached).
Last year you had to beat your BQ time by 2:09 to get in. The year before that it was 2:28. If you are trying to qualify at NYC keep in mind that it would be fore the 2019 Boston Marathon as the 2018 registration window is in September and NYC is in November (too late).

OK wow did NOT know that. After I ran 11 in a deluge yesterday. Glad I asked
if you are under by more than 5 minutes, there are no odds...you will get in
less than that, there are odds, but no one can tell you what they are.
several folks have run complicated formulas and spreadsheets trying to predict the cut-off and not come very close
